New base Cayman announced
#21

Ok,

Two things

Firstly the Cayman will probably be around twice as stiff (thats progress)as a 968 so getting close to the handling will be difficult without a full cage ;-)

It should therefore eat a 68 on track

Secondly, I doubt there will ever be a CS or a model with an LSD for that matter because of the 911 (Porsches favourite baby as we all know)

Anyway, I'd prefer a Z4M which in my view is the real spiritual succesor to a 968 CS or I'd save up and buy a GT3 which is afterall one of the only 'real' Porsches these days as all the entry level cars seem a bit girly!

Or buy one of the very nice slightly used 996 Carreras that I have seen going in the mid-40s.

I'm not saying it's bad or anything, I'm sure it's more than capable of smoking the 968... I just wouldn't get one unless it was the "s" version

the Cayman is actually cheaper then a 968 was when new.

the base price of a 968 Coupe in 1992 was $39,850

the base price of a 987 Cayman today is $49,900

factoring in the inflation rate, a 1992 968 Coupe had a base price of $57,516.93 in todays dollars.

what i find amazing is that over a decade and a half later, Porsche actually managed to keep the weight of the their entry level car 220LBS lighter compared to the 1992 968 Coupe.

5 more HP, 220lbs less weight, & 8grand cheaper in todays dollars, Not bad for a brand new entry level Porsche with full warrenty if you ask me.

a used 911 which will cost more to maintain over a brand new Porsche with better driving dynamics & warrenty. thanx, but no thanx.

all improvements and developments of the cayman aside, i sure wish porsche would start thinking about the buyers of their cars, and what they want - a large percentage of them play golf - have you ever tried to get 2 sets of clubs and 2 people into any porsche other than a 968?

[quote name='Renalicious' date='May 25 2006, 11:00 PM']I'm not too impressed with the new version, not compared to the "S" anyways. Yeah it might be more affordable (than other new models), but meh, it doesn't seem MUCH better than what I have now with the 968. If I was to get a new porsche, I'd rather get the "S" version, or a 911 as expensive as they may be.

A pristine 99 to 01 911 can be had for ~35k most anywhere in the US, which really bothers me since I paid way more than that 3 years ago. Any of the guys who buy new Porsches don't worry about the cost of most anything. The first day the Cayman S went on sale I went to the dealership at 11:00AM. I had to take a number (121) to get in line and talk to a salesman. The cheapest one they had on the lot was 66 and change and by the end of the day every one they had was gone except the PCNA car that wasn't for sale. I would have had to pay >30k difference to trade MY2000 996. I didn't offer it up, but I'm sure i couldn't have gotten a Cayman for my 996, 968, and Boxster all three. Marketing is everything.

2 sets of clubs and all of our luggage for a week will go into the back of our 911 fine, but it's a pain to put it back there. You have be be very careful not to scratch up the interior. You can actually get 4 sets of clubs in the back seat if you have to.

Or Guitars! That's my constant final evaluation factor: Can the guitars fit in the back!
