Just get on 12th street, cross freeway and map a left turn onto Brush move to the right and they will be located on your right, between 6th and 7th I believe. Little hard to find the first time.

I'm guessing this tire is not on anyones short list - especially since Summer is coming - But a few months ago I put a set of the new Kumho Ecsta 4x UHP all-season tires on some stock 944S2 16" rims (205/55/15 front and 225/50/16 rears) and, so far, I have been pleasantly surprised. While this tire/wheel combo is only intended to be for the winters up here in Carson City; I've actually considered running them through this summer to see how they perform when the roads are warmer.... I'm 50/50 on that, as I do have 17" rims waiting for new tires... so stay tuned.

Got to really try out the new S-04's the last couple of days. Up Highway 29 through Napa to Silverado Trail, over Mt. St. Helena, then 175 to Lakeport and back. About 250 miles round trip on some great curvy roads. The tires felt glued to the road and were surprisingly quiet. Big Fun drive!

Yep, excellent a/x tire as well as street. Comes up to temp quickly. Expect 10 to 15 thousand miles depending on how hard you push them. Has very good wet traction.

Ok so Time to buy new tires - probably Bridgestone S04's ....



The question is what size to buy - I have kinesis Super cups in 17" with 8" diameter up front and 9" in the rear



so the rear is easy 255/40 and 25" diameter



but for the fronts I can go with 235/45 for the 8" rim but tire is 25.4" diameter

or a 245/45 optimum is 8 1/2" rim and tire diameter is 24.7"



So thoughts - optimum width but taller or shorter but wider and slightly off optimum width?

You could also opt for the 225/45, which would be 25" exactly. These would fit an 8" rim and are available in the S-04.

I currently run Bridgestone RE-11's.



Love them. I use the car for autocross and 2-3 DE's a year. I drive the car maybe once a month, less in the summer. I have had them a couple thousand miles and they perform well. Better wet traction than the Yokohama AD08's.

Not the quietest of tires, but man do they grip. Almost "R" compound levels. Seems to be a favorite tire for street and track at Sebring, which punishes tires.

Ya I have the 225/45's on the front right now...but with all this talk of how great a square set-up can be I was thinking of how close I could get with the rims I have...not planning on changing them soon - took to long to find them...

you can actually make things worse by running too wide of a tire on a rim not designed for it.



the advantages of a square setup is decreased sidewall flex on the front, and ability to rotate tires, but it presumes a matched rim.



the increase in tire size reduces tire temps, which reduces understeer. many people screw up and reduce front pressure. this increases tire temps on the outside corner of the outside tire, which makes it lose traction sooner. a tire that is too wide for the rim would do the same thing. a square setup refers to the rims more than the tires.



so, if you aren't going to change your rim, you are pretty much limited to a 1 size increase, before you start losing grip under hard driving.



further, going too wide on a rim up front will create more steering resistance, and some "bounce back" deflection on bumps and ruts. you will likely increase tramlining. some of this will happen whether you go with a square setup or not. a wider tire means more outside influence. it also increases wind drag, and a lot more than you might think.

Since this thread is already "active" I'll post here instead of making a new one.

I'm gonna buy new summer tires next year, meaning I have a separate square setup with studded tires for the winter.





I'm running a 8x18" wheel at the front and a 10x18" at the rear and I'm thinking about going for a 235 section at the front and a 265 section at the rear.

Michelin or continental would be my first two choices. I want a relatively quiet tire with good dry performance. Any opinions?

I'm using a pilot sport cup right now so anything will be better than that in the rain. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
