My upcoming test drive
#21

Got the disappointing news today ; Nasdaq could not finalize the deal for that date with the track - they were trying to squeeze in early morning for a few hours before the other race events later on, and were initially told that wouldn’t be a problem , but as it turns out it’s not possible , so they were offered another date in July .  The test drive is still on, but it’s now moved to a very large private property and several scenic winding roads in Sonoma.    Not bad at all, but very different driving experience .

Yes, no helmet, beautiful country roads at the wheel of a new Ferrari , what not to like ?!  B)

And that’s in wine country , so I may make some stops along the way for tasting ..in which case the drive back will certainly be on winding roads ..or at least it will feel like they are ..   Tongue

It was a good drive, but I liked the Pista I drove three years ago a lot better.  Although the 296 is definitely a fun car, somehow I still can’t warm up to six cylinder twin turbos with an added electric motor, no matter how fast …it just doesn’t do it for me ..a totally different vibe vs. a n/a V8 Ferrari engine, and not to mention Maserati’s exhaust sound with it, which is unmatched by any car on the planet, to which I’ve been accustomed for seven years now..

On another note, they served outrageously expensive wine ( only allowed to enjoy that after you drove the cars ..of course ).  All the wines were from  Penfolds  ;  the ones I tried were a Shiraz,  a “Quantum” Cabernet Sauvignon, and what they call a Grange ,  The quantum and the grange were  $ 760 , and $ 800 each per bottle  ( heck, I’d hardly pay that much even for a case ! ) .   They were serving those freely with no limits to the people there  ( but small crowd ..there were no more than 50 folks ..)

I guess they’re really hoping for some orders of the 296.  They did get two , of which I know .  Most of the people there owned multiple Ferraris.   It’s about a 2 year wait for the 296 GTB.  Price is in mid to upper $ 300k .  Typical one is around $ 365 K .
Eh, I got to see how the other half lives ..

Interesting impressions of the 296.  The review I read of it in Car and Driver said that Ferrari did a great job of making a very "digital" call feel "analog", but it sounds like not even Ferrari can completely pull off that feat.  And I'm not surprised about the two-year wait - heck, that isn't much longer than for a new Bronco, or so I hear...

Nah, waaay to many tech gadgets everywhere , the steering wheel looks like a F1 wheel ..a million and one lights and controls and the dashboard has an equal number of dizzying displays on it .  Eh, I’m just an old fart who is tech-adverse, particularly when it comes to cars . I need only a speedometer , a tachometer ,  a fuel gauge , and a coolant temp gauge.   A stick shift and a clutch pedal , and I’m happy as can be.

actually not even the tachometer, I can feel when I need to shift, but it just a traditional gauge which looks nice there IMO .

You were very lucky to be able to taste Penfold's Grange. It is a blend of mostly Shiraz and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. It has been produced every year since 1951, I believe, and it is beyond extraordinary very nearly every year.

Yes, the Grange was extraordinary and that would be an understatement !!    Superb .  For sure in the top five best wines I’ve e ever tasted and I’m including Screaming Eagle in that category .   This one was better .

( I don’t remember the vintage of either / or )
