Mini Porsche reunion and drive

My buddy wanted to see my new 968 so we figured we might as well make a morning of it. Got to stretch our legs on the backroads just south of Hwy. 50 near Folsom. Great drive and I was happy to keep up with my buddies 914-6 3.0. Usually he walks away from my 914-4 pretty easily. We found a great spot to take a picture:

Ya, he has done a great job on it...and I mean "he". Justin has performed almost all the work on his own including building the engine, first to a 2.7, then bought a 3.0 and completely rebuilt it. Added the flares, re-did most of the mechanical and he AX's the crap out of it. He is a car guy through and through. He also has a Chevelle and sand rail he does all the work on.



He is a great friend to have, I usually call him when I have a problem on my 914 and it sounds something like "The bolt holding the thingy next to the other bolt in front of the pipe broke, what does that do again?" and he usually has the correct answer <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

That's what 968 (Porsche) ownership should be about. Get out and drive! Enjoy going places and down roads you might not do if it were not for the ride you have. Taking pictures is a great way to stimulate that. I am always amazed how many great places and roads I have already taken in the 968 when I look over the "968" folder under Pictures on my computer.

Sharp looking 914. I have always had a soft spot for he 914, but that one is just down right "good lookin"!

I read this right after finishing your road trip/speeding ticket post. Unfortunately, your car(s) will always attract attention on the roads. Some deserved, some undeserved.



Do you autocross in either the 914/968? If not, u might take a 2 day course and find out what these cars are really capable of. Most instructors drive your car then ride with you.

Ya I have auto crossed the 914, not the 968 yet, and I agree its a great way to figure out the limits of the cars. I don't do it much though because I feel like its hard on the cars and I always seem to break something making it an expensive hobby <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/3gears.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I've found that school and Autocross helps make you a better driver. It makes you more attentive to all the really poor drivers out there. But, now lets be honest, just how long can you be good? Perhaps there are those among you who snicker and think, " gee I have no problem- what's his? Yet all to frequently I look and think crum I'm going to fast again! Perhaps it's just the joy of driving the car! DS knows what I mean. He keeps lawyers on retainers. Lol

Yes, indeed. It is impossible to drive this car slowly because it handles so incredibly well at high speeds it entices you into it. In my experience anyway this car feels far more planted / secure at triple digit speeds that any other car I have driven ( and i have not taken those even close to the levels I took the 968 ) including Ferraris , Audis, BMWs, Jaguars, AMG MBZs, and Corvettes among others.

My dad always thinks its amazing how well these cars handle at higher speeds. Even my 914 is the same. Things creak, lightly vibrate and meander somewhat until you get above 80 then its smooth sailing. A testament to Porsche engineering I guess.

I learned some of the capability of this chassis with an 80 924turbo on 205/16 pirelli at all corners. At a "meet" with other mostly 911 drivers, mine and another 924T were able to stay with all of them, and they soon tried to lose us. After 90mph the car transitioned and it was really eager to perform. Of course this was in the early 80s on rural two lane roads. My point is that anyone who try's that now on public roads is liable for much more, has much more at stake both legally and financially. The number of cyclists, motorcycles and other drivers who now try to experience their vehicle is just too high. A low cost option to this is autocross, and especially autocross schools that last for a couple of days. The higher cost option is track time and track schools, which often requires a dedicated car.
