Boxster S Drive
#1

I'm in Germany for a few days this week and got to drive a friend's Boxster S yesterday. Did some local and autobahn driving and I must say I'm impressed. The car is very solid and quick. The engine sound is perfect and makes you want to keep the revs up. At autobahn speeds, say above 200 km/hr the wind noise - top up- is noticeable.

I thought the throw distance was a little long between gears but maybe all Porsches need short shift kits.

I did not have a chance to really check out the brakes.

All in all the car's a lot of fun. Thumbs up.

I drove one at Paso and was also suitably impressed. Although it had some trouble keeping up with the sc cars!

The Boxster and Cayman, on papaer at least, seem like amazing cars - dream car territory, in fact. But their price will keep them in dreamland for the foreseeable future, for me, anyway.

I used to have a 2000 Boxster S. loved it, but I love the 968 also but for different reasons.

I spent three days in the 2010 Cayman at Paso Robles and put about 800 miles on the car. It had great acceleration and handled extremely well. It had 12000 miles on the clock when I was done. I just rented a new Boxster with 5000 miles on it (both tips) and drove it over 1000 miles in three days at desert speeds (90-120 mph for extended periods). It was concerningly slow, and by that I mean if I hit the gas hard, it would downshift and start to really scream, but there was no acceleration. It was literally like driving a Honda Accord in that passes had to be timed and often using momentum. Maybe the rental company restricted the car somehow? My wife even commented on what a dog it was. The convertible top was nice, but otherwise it was a total pig.

Did you find that when you used the paddles or just the regular auto Manuel mode

That's very strange about the new Boxster. Even in non-S form, it's a very fast car. Not Corvette fast, but it should still be fast enough to snap you neck back pretty well. Doesn't seem right...

Strange. It was an S with 6 speed that I drove Sunday. Dog was not a word that came to mind when I was in it.

Wonder if everyone other than Tama drove the Boxsters " solo " , while he had another passenger in the car at the time ( he mentioned his wife thought the car was a dog also, so I presume she was riding along..) As we know from our own cars that can make a huge difference. Add to that the heavier cab factor and it could very well be dragging a bit.. I don't think rental companies restrict speed of the cars in any way, though I don't know that for a fact. Maybe they do order restrictive custom chips for high performance cars but that seems doubtful

Manual or auto didn't matter, and it was me, the wife, and about 80 pounds of luggage in both cars.

Your wife is a little slip of thing. I found it was quicker with the paddles but again couldn't really keep up with 968's with the sc upgrade. Of course, that made me pleased as punch!

The S I drove here was with the 200#+ owner. Could just be that the S adds a bunch more punch.

and an additional 80 lbs o luggage ?! listen, if you have two people in the 968, with 80 lbs of luggage in the trunk, and you just happen to be also on a full tank of gas, ( ok, and maybe the AC on.. ) you might lose to 944 with just a driver and a 1/4 tank full. So it would not surprise me one bit if the Boxster felt sluggish by comparison to the 968.

I thought all Boxsters post 2013 were the " S " model, did not think they produce the basic one anymore

I haven't driven the newer Boxsters but having driven an older base 2.7 and a 3.2 S, I can tell you there is a big difference in power and braking. It was about 50 hp difference between them.

I just assumed the Boxster was a Cayman with a soft top. I've poked fun at my friend for driving one for two years, and my license plate even says NOTABXTR, but after driving that Cayman I had really high hopes... don't they have the same engine?

The 968 will never lose to a n.a. 944. My 944 was a blast to drive but got smoked by everything from Mini Coopers to mini-vans. I think it had less than 170hp. Still a great car, but not in the same class as the 968 when considering torque and power.

Well, maybe it was a little exagerraion, but not by that much when you add all those factors described above.. I drove 944s for 18 years, and while they're definitely not nearly in the same performance league as tne 968 ( except they handle better because they're considerably lighter and with the same 50-50 balance ratio ) and are indeed fun to drive, keep in mind that you can't simply rely on hp or torque alone to determine who is faster. The 968 at 238 hp and 225(?) ft/lbs will stay pretty much neck in neck with several cars that have 300 + hp and with 50 or more ft/lbs higher torque.. and mostly because of weight. By the same token the 968 can be embarassed by cars with 175 or so hp ( not the 944, but a tiny Lotus will..) ,again because of weight .. but what I was saying is that loading up any car with another 200-250 lbs will significantly slow it down, so if you take a stock 968 cab, give your amateur sumo wrestler a ride, have a full tank of gas, and load the trunk with the bags of sand you just bought at home depot, don't expect to outrun that 2700 lbs 944 driven by an anorexic jockey :-) :-) So even a Boxter S if loaded up with all the weight might feel sluggish compared to the 968 we drive on our own, on any given day. Just my $ 0.02
