Motor mounts
#1

I just dodged a big bullet, I think. I have the top of my engine apart for a blown head gasket, starting to reassemble and looking over things and doing a bit of cleaning in the engine bay. Looking at the motor mounts I'm thinking it would be easy to replace now, rather than wait and do from the bottom. I had the new mounts, just waiting to get to it. So as the picture shows quite a bit of compression, new to old. As I was checking this I noticed a bit of fluid coming from the old one, It was cracked, then I twisted it a bit and boom, it pull right in half, with almost no effort. Lesson for the day, and it's been talked about quite bit, old rubber or polymers deteriorate, period, so when changing our hoses and belts don't forget your mounts. 93, 97000 miles.

Ouch! Did you opt for the aftermarket mounts or the geniune articles? If genuine, where did you get them and how much did you pay (if you don't mind me asking)?

Sunset, so OEM I would assume, I'll look the price up when I get home tonight, I've had them waiting for over a year.

Hmm, now I wonder if my tower brace will fit, Never had a problem with it rubbing the vanity cover, ( not a DR1) always had plenty of room over the top.

I see Flash just sold the last one he had, I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed.

One of my motor mounts was also cracked when I replaced them several years ago. How did you replace yours from the top (in other words, how does removing the head allow you to replace the mounts from the top?)

Just installed my D1R strut brace and I've got about 8mm clearance between it and the fuel rail cover. With my previous KLA brace, I had to run without the cover, as the brace made contact. I've got one fairly new motor mount (passenger side), and one of indeterminate age. Your mileage, of course, may vary, but good luck!

The head and manifold removed allow the brackets from the mount to the block to come right off easy. You still need to remove the pivot bolt on the A arm to get to the lower mount nut, but just knock it out and move the A arm out about an inch, then you have access to that hidden nut. I just found it a bit more accessable than from under and around.

Ah, OK. Plus with all the weight of the head and manifolds removed, it's probably a lot easier to maneuver the mounts into position.

Yup, I just used a floor jack under the pan to hold it, it was just easy to unbolt this way.

That's what I figured. I replaced mine about four years ago, and from a visual inspection, they still seemed to be OK, so I re-used them when I put my engine back in this past April. Hopefully this was a good decision...

For some reason I think it wasn't a bad idea to put in new motor mounts... Guess wich one was closest to the exhaust?

Any write ups on this? Is it the same as the 944 or are their gotchas for the 968? Latest part numbers?

Thanks!

As I recall, the 944s were solid . Not sure if the turbo ( 951 ) were liquid filled.

p.s. had to edit this post, because the autocorrect feature typed in " We're liquid filled " And while that may be true, LOL, it's not what I intended to write :-)

no "gotchas" per se, but don't buy the cheap aftermarket ones. they are well known for failing in about a year.

I have to check mine as well, even though I learned that tip cars vibrate much more than six speeds because of the flex plate , this damn car shakes worse than Michael J Fox riding an epileptic horse. ( What ! Too soon ? :-) ) The motor mounts are just about one year old and 15 k miles on it, but as noted in the previous post I have no idea if they're aftermarket and just failed miserably . My mechanic swears they're shot just by how tne car feels, he did not have a chance today ( when I was there for other things ) to measure or test them.
