Just purchased a '94 968 with M030 option. To repair a leak in the power steering hose, previous owner removed the rack. When he reassembled it, he misaligned the rack and pinion. When the front wheels are straight, the steering wheel is turned to the right about 15 degrees. I suppose I could just remove and reposition the steering wheel. Is this s good solution? I would prefer to align the rack and pinion as it is supposed to be. Is it necessary to lower the rack to do so? What is the best way to assure correct alignment?

At the bottom of the rack there is a round rubber plug. This plug is a cover for an inspection hole to center the rack. If you move the rack from one side to the other you will see a dimple appearing through this inspection hole. Once this dimple is visible the rack is centered.
Place a ball bearing into the hole and screw in a flywheel bolt. This will lock the rack in the center position. You can also sharpen the flywheel bolt to have a slight point if you don't have a ball bearing.
Not that your rack is centered you can remove and replace the steering wheel in the correct position.
Keep in mind that your horn ring might need centering too. If you have an airbag remember to disconnect the battery and leave the car for AT LEAST 45 minutes before removing the airbag, just to be safe I leave mine overnight.
