Does the sound fluctuate with the rpms?

In that case It sound like a hydraulic tappet you describe.

Is it coming from the top of the engine??

Or maybe a heatshield is cracked when they replaced the starter or so.

The flex plate just wears out...no mystery. 75,000 or about 6 years, take your pick. It can be costly to replace too. Some shops prefer to lift the motor to change it. If yours does, get them to replace the pan gasket while they're at it. It can save you $$$ in the future.
