Looking at a 968 this week
#1

Any particulars I should focus on? Guy on the phone said the fender has been replaced, I'm going to run a carfax but the title is clean. . .I'm not worried about a car that has had some bodywork, I don't want a bent frame car though. I'm going to get a PPI, is there anything in particular I should ask to have done?

Is it front end damage?

A good indication of frame damage is drifting.

On your test drive, get on a flat highway (crown <= ~1%) and get into the

middle lane. Going 60 mph let go of the wheel and see if the car will complete a lane change on it's own (within 7 seconds or so). If it does you need to have to tires, alighment and front end checked out.

Otherwise, make sure the PPI place can check to see if the frame is straight (my fav shop in my area has the factory porsche specs, and a great frame alignment system).

Check the paint outside in bright sun or inside in bright flourescent lights for match.

I have had, and read about PPI's that left out plenty! Look through the car yourself for telltale signs of repairs that have not been made that were needed. Interior finish and engine cleanliness usually indicate something about the seller and the car.

Check the front for leaks of all fluids as well as the transaxle.

As Porsche dealers go, most have never worked on a 968, and will not give you a real picture of what is wrong. My local dealer reported bad running lights because they did not know how to turn them on,,,does not inspire confidence.

My advice is to get the PPI done at a shop that works on and knows 968's. It will still take about $5k in the first year to get her running and repaired to tip top shape. These are WONDERFUL cars, but costly. Caveat Emptor.

Good luck, I hope that she turns out to be a winner.

P.S. ask for service records, the more you can get usually indicates that she has been maintained well.

Check out the PPI pinned in the Buyers section...it is very comprehensive.

Best of Luck,
