Newbie looking to buy
#1

Was shown a 1994 968 coupe with 42K mi. Red ext/int. Very clean and well maintained with records, window sitcker etc... I stopped into a known local Porsche sale/repair shop and this car happened to be in for service and had a for sale sign in the window. No official PPI yet though the mechanic/shop owner said that it was one he'd buy if in the market. This was the first time he's seen/serviced this particular car. Asking price is $19,900... was commented to be alittle high but acceptable considering the exceptional condition of the car. I went in looking for info on a 928...my long time dream to own one and now I'm interested in this 968. I've never owned a sports/performance car, so this will be the first. I'm due to drive it tomorrow. Any input on the value will be appreciated. I'm sure this can be something I'll enjoy. Thanks.

Read as much as you can on this forum tonight before tomorrow!

Then drive the car and if you like it, make an offer with a refundable deposit "subject to a clean PPI". You order and pay for the PPI, and if something serious comes up, walk or use it to re-negotiate price. If it's as clean and as good as it sounds, buy it and have fun. 928's are great cars, but you need deep pockets to keep that complex machine running in top order. 968's are less costly to maintain and offer a terrific Porsche experience. There's always a market for good 968's. Good luck.

Thanks for such a quick reply. It is listed to have new tires, brakes, rotors and motor mounts. Belts done at 40K. Mileage is 41k. Do these all have a limited slip rear end or is it an option which some nay not have? Thanks again. PS, I noted a few minor scrapes under the front bumper from parking lot curbing as well as the plastic screen immediately above having been cracked. The rubber seal on the side molding where it curves just ahead of the front tires seems to have shrunk and is pulling up and out of the curve. I suspect this is normal for a car of this age. Undreneath at the spare tire well in back there seem to be some red paint overspray on the undercoating. I immediately thing of body work/repair, but it appears to be aged and perhaps it could've come from the factory like that...either way a drive , a PPi and a run by the body shop should get the story straight. I'm looking forward to it.

check here http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=31 for the Option decoder - and no, LSD was not standard on the 968.

the cracked lower grill is common as are scrapes as these cars are pretty low at the nose. Ditto shrunken rubber molding / fittings. Look under the doors - those long plastic side skirts - if they show scrapes, you'll have a good idea how the car was treated - same with rim rash. The red paint overspray on the spare wheel well is not factory - so probably had some touch up on there over the years. But a body shop inspection should tell the story.

Sounds like the seller did all the right stuff though with belts, rotors and motor mounts - those are the key items that always need attention. The lower ball joints on the front A arms are another item to check as they are "sealed for life" which means new A arms if they are shot - but with such low mileage, they should be fine. Oil leaks are something to look into however - that can be fairly expensive to reseal the motor. Check the service records if available - the rear pinion bearing on the 6 spd can be a problem on the manual transmission cars and that is expensive to repair.

Keep us posted on your search for the right car!

i have been told that the rubber molding does not shrink like that unless the side skirt has been off the car - that would indicate some paint work - overspray definitely indicates respray work - inspect closely for signs of impact damage

at this age, look closely at the shocks and struts too - they are age worn components as much as mileage, as is every other rubber component on the car

pinion bearing is about 1600 to fix - there is no relation to mileage or age - it happens on some cars, and not on others - it is not nearly as common as some might think - we just hear about it a lot becuse it is common for any particular failure, and it's a pretty big tag for the repair, but it not something that is by any means inevitable

19.9 is on the high side if it's not an M030 car, but not too far out of line, and certainly not too high if it's the right car for you

Don't want to mess you up too much with choices, but here's a very well sorted car at the "other" site http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=219988 Raj is well known in the 968 circles.

yes, Mileage is higher, but that list of work and the M030 on speed yellow is stunning and RARE. Plus you just have to get those Kinesis Supercup wheels in 18x7.5 and 18x10 with that car.....

Just an alternative to let you know there are some great 968's out there. There's a local guy who recently bought a 93 Coupe with only 10,000 miles on it for around $25K, it looks and smells brand new.

Does one have to join Rennlist to contact the seller of this 928 mentioned in the link? Also...what are "splitters". Thanks. The M030 interests me. I'd like to contact the seller.

You don't have to join, but you do have to register in order to send messages to users. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the splitter is a lip that goes under the front bumper. I don't see it in his pictures... perhaps it was off at the time.

Here's what it looks like:

Thanks Guards Red. I'll register and e mail. The Red 968 I saw and will drive today is 10 minutes away. NJ yellow M030 about 1000 mi. away. Let's see how this all works out. Funny thing...4 days ago I didn't know what a 968 was!

Hey what a ride!...only things bugging me are the sun visors not snapping up as high as I think they should. Bending forward my forehead hits. I'm 6'2". There's no steering wheel tilt on these is there?...otherwise, the lid to the cassette holder center console is a bit loose...and the door hinges a bit loose. not bad overall. Clutch pedal squeeks a bit when depressing it so that'll be checked out. Will keep you all posted. Thanks!

Yep, visor and cassette holder problems you mentioned are pretty typical. I think both can be chalked up to bad design. Visor bugs me if it's down, too... If it's not broken, though, it's fine. It runs in the $80 range to replace new, or used ones can sometimes be found on ebay. Not sure about the cassette holder... I think it might be a little cheaper.

Fix for both. Pull out the cassette separators, Who has cassettes anyway????

A check book fits Perfectly between the gap in the roof and supports the sun visor.

My neighbor has a Red 968 for sale. Not sure what he is asking tho. I know it is a clean car with a brand new clutch. Car has been babied. His phone # starts with 530 area code. Sorry I can't give more info. I don't see him too often. He was part of the latest No. Cal 968 tour. Photos here. Sacto. group See post #26. If you want I'll get you his phone #
