Looking at a '94 968
#1

Hey Everyone,

I posted this on .net, and my friend is looking to buy this car. I told my friend about it, it seems (from pictures) to be in very nice cosmetic condition. It has the 17" wheels, which I am told is a plus.

I called up the guy, and he said that he doesnt know if the pinion bearings and varicam chains and pads were replaced. On 968.net, they told me that only about 10 percent of all 968s were afflicted with this pinion bearing problem. I'm worried about that, because that is a very costly repair.

Thankfully, this seller told me that he has no problem and will not object to the car being tested by a mechanic. My friend knows a trusty mechanic in NJ, where he lives. The car is in Islip NY, about 40 miles from here. Do I need to go to a specialized Porsche mechanic to check out the car? My friend services his Acura TL, and his brothers Jag XJ at this mechanic, who he knows personally, is knowledgeable, and has done a good job on his cars.

The car has about 74K miles.

I am going with my friend to check out the car on Thursday.

Any help would be appreciated <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I would highly encourage you to get a PPI done by a knowlegeable mechanic that specializes in Porsche. I would go so far as to say that you need to seek out a shop that does lots of work on the water cooled older cars as well. There are at least 3 shops I can think of in Atlanta close to me that fit this bill, so I would imagine it's the same in NY/NJ area.

Lots of people race prep the 968/944 etc, and they would be good candidates. Cross post to the 924/944/968 board on Rennlist and they should be able to point you in a good direction. I would not trust a PPI from a new Porsche dealer [unless I knew they had a good competent tech for the older cars] or a tech who does other makes and does not specialize in Porsche.

Do you know of any Porsche techs in the Islip, NY area?

I agree that you need someone who knows 944/968's. I'm sure there's gotta be a couple good shops in the NYC area. Bob Blackwell, Perbal, Jason Judd, or Jim Anchorman aught to be able to tell us.

Sorry I can't help on this one. I left Long Island in 1991 and am completely out of touch with the mechanics in that area now. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I'm taking it to RPM Racing in Huntington, a guy at Rennlist gave me the tip off. We're getting a PPI on Thursday, and its very possible we will buy the car then. I'll keep you guys updated.
