LED interior lights
#1

Have you seen these little jewels.

I found them in PEP Boys and installed them in the rear hatch area, overhead, and under hood. I thought they would run cooler than the original. The attached heat sink is as hot at the original lamp. they are considerably brighter and more high tech...for what it's worth.

Under hood? I have an early 92 and I don't believe there is an under hood light. Can anyone shed a little light on the issue?

Mine was first registered in March '92. I don't know the actual production date, but it has the under hood light.

Mine was built 12/2/91 and has an underhood light. I went with LED's from superbrightleds.com. Part # 4210-WWHP6: warm white, for the dome and trunk and the 360 degree bulb for under the hood. Pricey but very nice. Had gone with the cool whites, but they were too blue.

Ha! I checked and mine has a light. It has never worked, so I never noticed it was there. Now I have a reason to get some cool LED's!

Ernie, what is your production number? Mine is a very early one (# 87 of 2008) too. Are you aware of any differences (besides the hood) between our cars and the later ones?

as far as i know, and according to the PET and the wiring diagrams in the shop manual, all 968s came with an under hood light. however, many people have removed them, likely due to failures that resulted in dead batteries or alarms going off.

Flash, what switches the light? It turns out I have one, but it never worked so I never noticed it was there.

there is a switch, similar to the one at the rear of the car, but at the hood latch.

Interesting, I assumed that switch was for the alarm. I never considered it was for a light because I never noticed there was a light. Good news: I have an underhood light. Bad news is, I have another thing to fix!

Jay, part # is 4210- WWHP12: warm white. It just fit better than the larger plate LED (I didn't want to stress the plastic either). I fashioned a piece of heavy duty aluminum foil between the bulb and hood (as a reflector) and it works quite nicely. I spent the money on the LED's, with the thought that I'll never have to replace them again. HA!

MCL, If it's the last 4 numbers of the VIN, my car is # 65. Flash has a list of "YEAR BY YEAR DIFFERENCES" in the reading room. Check it out, there are a number of differences. I do like the recessed badge, except I just got a replacement and it is slightly "crowned", not nice and flat like the original.

Thanks, I will look for that. I have noticed some obvious differences, like the upholstery, but I imagine there are lots of others.

According to Porsche, mine was produced in September of 91, the last three digits are 147, which equates to car number 87. I guess Porsche had prototypes and other uses for the first 60 or so ID numbers. I don't know if this same difference applies to the hardtops.

I will check out the hood light tonight. The PO gave me a bag full of bulbs, so if it's just the bulb it should be an easy fix.

Lots of easy LED options for the interior lights.

41mm Festoon for the interior and boot/trunk (possibly the engine bay?) - they come in various number of LED's. I went for just 3 as bright enough but i've seen 16!

36mm Festoon type for the rear number plate lamps

3 main dash bulbs CANBUS 501's, also side lights, side repeaters. Probably the best few $'s you can spend on the car doing the 3 dash bulbs.

286 LED's Various other dash bulbs, ashtray, headlight switch, clock, ciggy lighter etc

be aware that LED dash bulbs disable the dimming function. they also are "spotty" in the beam, and not as even as the incandescent bulbs. i didn't like them at all, and i tried a few different ones. they were all too bright, and made too much glare. i can see them working well in other locations though

MCL, I don't know where a thread about production numbers should be posted, but my VIN ends in 0065. I may have a very early car? Anyway, there are LED's available for blinker's, stop lamps, etc. also I did them all when I went to the euro turn signals. I had to get a relay, but they are very crisp and bright. They aren't cheap, but I don't plan on ever changing a bulb again.

i would check your cruise control. that is known to become inoperable when LEDs are used in the brake lights.

Thanks Flash, but to the best of my knowledge, I don't have cruise control in my car.
