Center Brake Light LED Conversion
#1

My center brake light sockets were corroded and two were non-functional, so I decided to figure out how to convert to LEDs. I purchased a water-proof strip of red LEDs from SuperbrightLEDs for about $15, and fashioned a little "stand" out of aluminum sheet. The LED structure fits in between the old bulb assembly and the lens, so no cutting or other modifications are required, beyond disconnecting the old wires and soldering in the new. I'm happy with the result.

Flash: Nope, I have not checked the cruise yet as we are experiencing some bad weather today, but I'll check it out first chance I get and I'll report back ('course I never use the cruise anyway <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> ).

I got a short run in between the spits of rain and the cruise control appears to work fine. Tried it multiple times. I'll do more extensive testing when the weather clears up.

The LED strip I used does include current limiting resistors.

then it just might work. the other conversions people have tried did not do that, and the cruise control got all confused

What's the connection between the cruise control and the 3rd brake light? I've yanked my cruise control unit (never used it). My 3rd brake light stopped working shortly before I began my track build project; will the fact that the cruise control unit is gone make troubleshooting of the 3rd brake light more difficult?

current sensing i think. when you hit the brakes, the cruise disengages. i haven't looked into it, but that seems to be the problem.
