My center brake light sockets were corroded and two were non-functional, so I decided to figure out how to convert to LEDs. I purchased a water-proof strip of red LEDs from SuperbrightLEDs for about $15, and fashioned a little "stand" out of aluminum sheet. The LED structure fits in between the old bulb assembly and the lens, so no cutting or other modifications are required, beyond disconnecting the old wires and soldering in the new. I'm happy with the result.

Flash: Nope, I have not checked the cruise yet as we are experiencing some bad weather today, but I'll check it out first chance I get and I'll report back ('course I never use the cruise anyway <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> ).

I got a short run in between the spits of rain and the cruise control appears to work fine. Tried it multiple times. I'll do more extensive testing when the weather clears up.
The LED strip I used does include current limiting resistors.
