Intro and a few questions
#1

First of all I would like to say Hello, join recently to do some research on the 968. I have been knocking around the idea of picking up a 6 speed cab in the near future (the other car in the running is a 951), been awhile since I had a P-car, started with a '76 914 2.0, then '72 914, then '86 944 N/A, and a '92 944S2 Cab, and finally a '70 914 last. I have been searching to see if the things to be aware of when buying a 968 are the same as a 944, mainly timing belt and wasser pump. So far I have enjoyed reading about all the cars you guys have and I am looking forward to adding to the mayhem.

Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum.

As for things to look for, keep reading the forum. You'll identify them quickly. The big thing with a six-speed car is the pinion bearing but by now most of the problems have occurred and been repaired. Most. Not all. Watch out on lower-mileage cars.

Welcome John,

As for your questions "Yes" many of the same things can go wrong and need to be checked for as well as the pinion bearings (noise) and vario cam chain/pads (They wear after a time and need replacing) other wise they are almost bullet proof and less trouble than the 951.

yes - welcome - there are a few idiosyncrasies with this car, but that can be said of most any car

the pinion bearing issue is not nearly as bad as it has been made out - the occurrence, while certainly high for any such issue, only hit about 10% of the cars, and can happen at any time, regardless of mileage or age - it has nothing whatsoever to do with mileage, age of the car, or any other factor - it was merely a tolerance accumulation problem at the time of install - the variance is due to how much of the tolerance error was present on that particular car - the bearing was mechanically installed, and the amount of preload variance is the issue - those with the most preload failed first - those with a little less, failed later - those installed correctly, don't fail at all

but no matter what, the resolution is not that expensive if you catch it when it first starts making noise - it is generally about $1700

good luck
