autocross questions
#1

Hi,

So I've been lurking for a few weeks. I am looking into trading my car for a 968. I currently own a VW R32, which I love...but I am tired of the high payment. I autocross monthly and will probly do 1 or 2 DEs. Right now I use an extra set of rims and tires that fit in my hatch easily. How do you guys carry around extra tires? Do they all fit in the hatch?

Also, how necessary is an LSD? I mean would I be going from AWD to 1WD?? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks!

very cool - welcome welcome

i haven;t seen it done myself, but apparantly 4 wheels can fit, though i imagine it's danged tight, and no room for a passenger

are you planning on running racing tires? - if not, i wouldn't switch - i would buy a good tire, drive that tire all the time, and just replace them more often - tires are cheap - practice seat time with the same prep as race day isn't - this way you could spend more time practicing on other roads with the same prep

some guys run the pegleg, i presume due to budget constraints, but the LSD really helps in the corners

Four wheel will fit as long as you are running stock size wheels, but one will have to ride shotgun.

As for LSD, if you want to go fast at an autocross, you need LSD - end of story. There is more than enough torque in a 968 to make an open differential an exercise in throttle management. With an LSD, it's all about setup to get the car to dig out of the corner full throttle. The difference is substantial - been there done that.

Actually, my four 16" rims with Victoracers on them fit just fine in the back, along with the racing jack, helmet (sometimes two), bag o' tools, and other junk. This leaves the passenger seat open for a passenger. Done it many times. This is WITH a harness bar installed across the B pillars, too. The trick is to lean the two forwardmost wheels up, and the two rearmost tires sit flat at the rear of the hatch area.

Oh, and the choice of tire often comes down to what class you want to run in, be it DE or autocross. I enjoy something in-between (thus the Victoracers), but have seen plenty of good drivers run quick on really good street tires with treadwear in the 100-150 range, so Flash makes a good point. Of course, if you want to run as fast as you possibly can, go all the way with true racing tires, but be ready to spend some bucks.

I was thinking of 17x9 and 17x7.5 wheels. I don't remember ever getting them all in there, but maybe with some creative arrangement. Also the wiper motor gets in the way.

16s with 225/245 tires will fit in the back of a coupe so 17s with 225/255 should be fine.

Yeah I just started autocrossing last year, and after about 2 events I decided I better buy some AutoX dedicated tires. R-comps are too expensive for me right now, plus I need to learn more. I bought some Azenis RT-215s for around 100 per corner. I figured that way my "racing" tires would last two years, and my "street" tires would last at least two. A couple of friends are just bought the new 615s and are gonna run them year round, sure its easier but I'm skeptical as to how long they will last.

Oh yeah- Do you think it makes more sense to wait around and pay more for a coupe with LSD? Or buy a cheaper one and add the LSD later? From what I've seen they are over a grand, which wouldnt be bad if the car was 11k or so. Is it hard to find used LSDs?

PJ - if you are in the RDU area check out the local PCA region. We are running autocrosses in Maxton (giant WWII-era airfield) and Sanford, as well as DEs at Rockingham. We just got new timing equipment.

Next autocross is March 25th.
