A couple of questions

Hi



A couple of questions.



1. I posted a request for information for an owner's manual for a 94, in the Parts Wanted section and Gryphon suggested Sunset. Sunset has a manual for a 93 and a wait for 2 - 4 months for a manual for a 94. Since these cars didn't change very much from one model year to the next would opting for the 93 create any difficulties?



2. What would members recommend for wheel locks?

i can't see much being different in the owner's manual - i have a 94 manual, and could supplement anything different



as for wheel locks, i recommend not using them at all - they don't hold torque as well, are a huge hassle, and besides, that's what insurance is for, but, if you really want them, i have a set of the original ones i could probably be persuaded to sell

Speaking of wheel stuff. My lug nuts look like crap. I sell millions of lug nuts a year but I need the specs on those lugs to see if I can get any. Would you know the length and thread pattern?

I second Flash's recommendation on the wheel locks - don't use them. Just makes it more difficult to change the wheels and tires and adds precious ounces of weight to the wheels. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

i'm not a fan of aluminum nuts to begin with, but i definitely wouldn't buy used aluminum lug nuts - aluminum nuts are only good for about 25 uses - they lose their ability to hold torque - who knows how many times used ones have been on and off?



if you are changing, i'd go steel

I think I saw steel nuts listed as well.

Sometimes I see a seller there who sells new aluminum lug nuts.

aluminum - fine for a car that doesn't have its wheels taken off often, but not the best - also not legal for racing in most organizations



somewhere around here i think i have a set of aluminum nuts that i am pretty sure have only been off the car a half dozen times - not sure why i am hanging onto them either, other than i don't trust them enough to risk something happening on somebody else's car



by the way, the spec is M14 x 1.5 - not sure of the length

Pretty sure they are 14mm. Looks like OE would be a 1.5" 14mm. with a ball seat. As it turns out I have steel nuts with the open ends, 1.5" chrome and 2" chrome 14mm , all with ball seats. I'm going to take one of each home this weekend and see what's what. Hope one works becouse I have hundreds of each.

In looking thru the net for the bolt pattern , I was shocked to see the prices these locations were charging for lugs for our cars. So I hope one of these work. I have a number of "Splined" 14mm ball end chrome locking lugs also that come with the appropriate adapter lug socket. Deems it might be a better option than the key deal. (Whole lot less money).

they certainly hold torque better - i still am not a fan of the ability to lose the key, but it does work



i just realized i still have locks on the denali - i remember making the decision to keep them for 3 reasons - 1 - the car has 6 lugs, 2- the car sits outside, 3 - it is the tow rig, and frequently sits in unknown areas with the trailer attached



but, i have run into issues over the key - i forgot to pull it out once when it was at a shop, and the shop let it sit there all day until i called to check on it, rather than ask where the key was - this mangled my schedule - i suppose i could put it in one of the obvious places, but then what is the point of having locks if the crook knows where the key is?

I purchased some wheel locks from Perfomance Products for my Fiske FM10's. A mechanic using an air wrench over tighten the lock part on the rear wheels. I went thru 3 sets of keys trying to get the locks off and broke all three. Had to have the locks drilled out. No more wheel locks for me. I don't think stealing wheels is very big thing anymore unless you go to parts of the city that are seedy and/or crime ridden. Losing the key was always on my mind and I tried to keep it handy which probably defeated the need for wheel locks.
