It's funny, because I was about to put no for wood grain, but then realized my whole dash is wood in the TR6 and I love it...I just think it looks tacky in a lot of newer cars.
I know you hate the carbon look Flash...I'm always tempted by it, but I certainly respect it more when it's being used for it's properties, like in my windsurfing masts and booms...

I agree. Wood looks tacky.

I'd like to put wood trim on my 968. With the black top part and tan under part of the dash, I think a really dark stained wood would look nice. Something subtle but that would add a little texture to the fairly plain plastic there.
However, I'll probably just leave it the stock plastic until I find someone that can do a really good job with the trim.
Another option I thought about would be glossy black piano trim. I've got that in my Mazda and I like the look there.

This only goes for the 968 - I just haven't seen an example of a woodgrain addition to the interior that I like, barring the stock rootwood shifter which is awesome (I am currently refurbishing mine).
More generally, I have to vote "no" to carbon fiber in any car interior.

I like the rich color wood in a Rolls, MB, or a Jag, but not in a 968. Carbon Fiber, Aluminum, EH, not so much, but to each his own. Whatever trips your trigger is fine with me. The only person I feel I have to please is myself. Oh, I'll be 73 in 6 days and am now beyond trying to impress anyone but myself.

Bob - you may be incorrect about the dings on the aluminum being from a guy with a ring - I thought the same thing when we bought our A4 Avant - there were only dings on the driver side door aluminum panel. I thought they must have had a lap dog who liked to look out the window and scratched it all up. Then one day getting out of the car the light bulb went off - it's the seat belt buckle swinging up and hitting it as it retracts!
As for trim choices - it depends on the interior. I prefer neither in the 968. The only thing I would think okay would be some satin-coated or oiled wood trim where you can still see the grain, although it would probably end up looking like the cheap stick-on job that it would be.
I've really never been a fan of the heavily coated woods where you lose all the grain. Audi has done a good job in their new A6/A7/A8 with the satin-poly woods.
That being said - I installed the S4 interior carbon fiber trim kit in our 09 A4 Avant and with the little silver beltline around the trim looks much better than the textured aluminum that was in there, and a lot better to me than the gloss-coated wood in my dad's Q5. The funny thing is that the carbon trim weights significantly more than the original thin sheet textured aluminum does... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> There does need to be a MIX of materials - all carbon fiber looks cheap/cheesy. Just like all aluminum, or all piano black.
And before you say "wait, you bought a CF trim set?!" - With what I paid for the trim set which included the S4 3-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters (the one thing I wanted to upgrade) and airbag, I ended up making a profit selling my steering wheel and trim.

Voted yes to both, love woodgrain steering wheels and in the right interior, carbon fiber looks good but like anything else, it'll look over the top if not kept under control...
