Infiniti G37 Coupe vs. 968
#21

335's are underrated. Due to the much wider power band, they are eaiser to drive fast then an M3...and about as fast with equally competent drivers. They put down about the same WHP iirc (despite being rated at only 300HP compared to 333HP in the M3 & 330HP in the significantly slower G37).

interesting stuff - wouldn't have thought it, but with all the stuff out there now, i'm not all that shocked - probably a lot more reliable than the M3 engine too

If you keep up with the 3 series, it seems to be a trend with BMW.....The top of the line 3 series (below the M) is about as quick as the previous gen M3.

E36 328i is about as qucik as an E30 M3
E46 330i ZHP is about as quick as an E36 M3
E92 335i is about as quick as an E46 M3

The M is the whole package though, not just an engine. A 335i wont handle as good as an M3, wont stop as quick, and wont give you the same feedback, will have a slower steering rack, etc etc.

Anyhow, i'm taking this thread way off topic now and apologize.....And all this BMW talk is making me miss my old M3.

My daily driver is a fairly well modified E36 M3 ('97) with similar (stock) numbers to my 968 - 240 HP, 236 TQ, 3200 lbs.

It's been interesting comparing the power delivery between the two. The M3 feels more torquey down low and up to about 5k, but even with the M50 intake manifold mod (larger runners) it runs out of breath at the high end. The 968 lugs right off the line (heavy flywheel?) but builds power very quickly through the midrange and really pulls strong up to 7k and beyond (RacerX chip) - acceleration is surprisingly good at freeway speeds, even in the higher gears.

The M3 is hands down more comfortable, with a quieter ride and a much smoother, more refined drivetrain, but damn the 4-banger in the 968 is impressive, and the Porsche chassis is much more solid than the E36.

I need to fire up the Dynolicious app on my iPhone and get some 0-60 numbers!
