ignition system replacement
#1

being the genius that i am, i let my coolant hose hang over my radiator fans and sure enough the fans cut through the hose and sprayed coolant all over my engine.

things seemed okay until yesterday when i had major hesitation issues.

i took apart the spark plug wires, plugs, dist cap, rotor, coil. i'm going to replace these parts, even if they aren't all necessary, for peace of mind. there was water everywhere!

before i order new ones, i was hoping for two points of advice...

first, is there any thing to keep in mind when ordering a new dist cap, rotor, and coil? brands to look for? sources?

second, the plug wires in the car had beru written on them. they were black. are these the factory originals, or upgrades? i don't want to replace something that's already been updated.

thanks!

I ordered all of these parts from Paragon and have been very happy with the results. The cap, rotor and coil are OEM Bosch parts.

I ordered Paragons 8mm wire set [Image: KB_09-002-2T.jpg] http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/kb_09-002.htm

The factory wires and any replacements should have Beru connectors on them. The factory wires could have been Beru.

I have heard of both but did not decide to try either.

I did notice improvement from replacing older (59k, 11 year) components with the new ones.

I thought there was an actual problem caused by the use of Nology plug wires. I can't remember if it was some one with hesitation problems or poor performance, but it seems the Nology wires were the problem after replacing tons of parts of course. It was some one on this list or Net. I would stick with normal wires.

it was a guy here - he had arcing issues with them - don't know if it was the design, or just the set of wires

If you mean points as in "breaker points" there are none in the 968. It is all electronic. So no lube required anywhere under the cap.

i was thinking the rotor and the metal contacts inside the cap. wasn't sure if it's best to just leave them bare, or coat them with some dielectric/similar? i've heard of distributor cap grease and wasn't sure if this is what it's used for.

Leave the inside of the cap dry. The dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that be used around the boots that fit over the cap towers and spark plugs. Helps seal against moisture and voltage leaks.
