Hood vs. wind screen wipers
#1

Could somebody help me out?

My left windscreen wiper is getting hit (slightly) everytime I open my hood. The hood seems to be flush with the fenders and front bumper, except for the left aft corner of the hood, which is a little bit higher than the fender (the rest of the left side seems to be ok, the seems being equally wide).

The wipers are not in the black area of the bottom of the windscreen as they should be. If I would lower them, they would obstruct the hood even more.

Could it be that my hood has to move towards the front, left and right alike? The gap between the hood and front bumper seems to be pretty large (about 8 mm)...

It certainly looks like your hood needs to be adjusted, forward and down...

could be.

first though i would check to see that the wiper arm is fully seated on the post, and that the nut is tight. they tend to back off.

Ok, I will check the wipers first, before I start fiddling with the hood, which, apart from that corner, looks not too bad.

Could somebody tell me how wide the gap in between the hood and the bumper should be?

Thanks!

I had this problem on the other side. The battery was reseated and the hood was then properly placed. Anything underneath causing that problem?

Nope Rap, there is nothing in that corner that hits the hood. I guess it has something to do with the hinge, but I'm not sure..

Mine did the same thing, I had a shop adjust the wiper arm and the problem went away. Apparently, there is an adjustment in there somewhere.

I am having the same problem. I checked the wiper nut and it's tight. The gap around my hood looks pretty uniform too. Please advise if you find it to be a wiper adjustment vs. a hood alignment issue. Thanks

I've always hated how the 968 wiper arms fit (or don't fit, rather) in relation to the hood and the windshield. One of these days I'm going to get ahold of some 944 wiper arms and see if they work. A friend of mine has a 951 and his wiper arms are different, and sit much more flush against the windshield.

Flash says the 968 arms stand up higher to give the springs a better angle to press the wipers harder against the windshield - for better high speed Autobahn-in-the-rain performance I assume. Since my car will almost never see rain, let alone 100 mph plus in the rain, I'm not sure I need that extra downforce. I certainly would like a nicer looking and fitting wiper situation however. Will report in once I get to the project.

We await the results...

I do not "see" the wiper arms when I am driving the 968. Wonder if it has to do with the fact that I am tall...

After reading about this type of complaint a while back, I tried slouching down in my car to "see" what a shorter person would "see". Then it seemed to make some sense... Just sayin'...

I'm 6'4" and they don't block my vision, but still bug me, both from behind the wheel and looking at the car from outside. Can't really explain why - it's just one of those things that bends my aesthetic sense the wrong way. Kind of like the Ferrari FF.

My wiper arm nicks the hood a little too when opening/closing the hood.

again, if the arms are not pushed all the way down on the post, they will hit.

remove nut

tap arm down onto post until it won't go any farther

replace nut

tighten to 15 ft/lb

Thanks flash, I'll check when I get home in a few weeks. I tightened it before but it is still really close but I didn't use a torque wrench. That maybe the difference.

Flash could you please make a well documented DIY on the wiper and nut thing? I do not understand the 3th step.

I finally got to take a look at the wipers. I came to the following conclusions:

1) I'm the proud owner two left side wipers arms. According to the PET there should be a difference between left and right.

Mine are 944 628 028 12. The right one should be 945 628 028 22.

The strange thing is: the problem is the left wiper arm, not the right one. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two?

2) By looking at the marks on the hood lock, its original position was indeed a bit more forward. I will adjust that.

3) the wiper arms can not be tapped onto the rods that hold them, the spring in the arm will pop it right back. I have to hold it down and at the same time tighten the nut. Is this normal? When I removed the nuts for the first time, I did not need a puller. When I tighten the nut way beyond 15 lb/ft and loosen it again, I can pull the arm off again without problems. Shouldn't the conical shape of the rod hold the wiper arm in place and isn't the nut's sole purpose to secure it all? Not to hold the arm in place?

Thanks for any advice and/or thoughts!

i don't think the rod is conical or tapered. that would tend to push the arm up and off during operation.

in order to tap it on, you must lift the arm, and then tap down.
