My hood is bent, is yours?
#1

Having installed the D1R Strut Tower Brace this weekend, I have temporarily become very cognizant of my hood. (This post has nothing to do with the brace, just to be clear).

Installing the brace involves putting parts very close to where the hood comes down, so naturally you have to be extremely careful about not dropping the hood and punching a new dimple into it. My clearance is good.

I was showing a friend my shiny new object this morning, and I happened to be looking along the plane of the hood as it opened and closed, with the sky as a backdrop (instead of the interior lights in my garage).

I noticed the slightest of creases in my hood, running all the way across, exactly where the rubber bumpers are positioned on the fenders, leading me to believe that over the course of 20 years, the hood has taken a set by being sprung down over those bumpers. The crease is a good six inches behind where the D1R brace is located.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have to check and will get back to u. I have a 92 that doesn't have the little bumpers on the fenders and what has happened is the winshield wipers hit the hood when they r on. I have been trying to find the part # for these bumpers that go on the fenders but so far no luck.

I always thought it has an unusual bend to it, and looked at others cars at during the get-togethers to see if mine was the only one that way, but seems most if not all of them have that curve..some more pronounced some less, but it's there IMO

Have you consulted the PET or called Sunset?

to my knowledge they're not available anywhere - I found just two several years ago at a salvage place in washington dc, I think, and that was after an exhaustive search.. but maybe they're back in stock at dealers, though not sure why.. do other Porsches have those ??

My car's hood has the best of both worlds: a very very slight bend in the location you describe AND a nice set of dimples courtesy of my mechanic, who is a 944 guy and was not aware that you must mount the strut bar on the backside of the uprights.

Doh! One reason I do as much of my own work as possible now. BTDT.

Thanks for the replies so far, and good to know this is a common "feature".

Yeah I should have told him, or just removed the bar entirely, but it totally slipped my mind when I dropped the car off. Both spots cracked the paint a little bit too. Sucks - my car has enough little dents already.

On the plus side, you have really nice wheels. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I also have a nice dent in the middle of the hood, where a mechanic who was tuning the aftermarket ECU put the hood down and most likely a spanner was resting on the front on the cam cover. I will at some point be going to a fibreglass hood - so at this stage it only pisses off the OCD part of me. I also have a bend in the front lip of the hood below the Porsche badge. It is real subtle, but under the right light it is really clear.

tama - thanks! But that's only because you can't see all the road rash on 'em. I had the right rear repaired and refinished, due to a crack on the inner lip (<acronym title='previous owner'>PO</acronym> must have hit something), and then proceeded to grind the pristine powdercoat against a curb a few months later. D'oh! Eventually I'll get them all re-done - it's on the never-ending to-do list!
