Hood hinge breaking off - how to fix it again?
#1

Hello to all '68ers who love and know their machines.

I was working with a friend fixing electrical bits in my cab, when at the very end of our work, I noticed the hood was stuck and I couldn't lift it entirely anymore. My friend grabbed his tools and we hurriedly removed the hood from the hinges. Right hood hinge is a-OK, but the left hinge was in trouble. The ball joint had broken off, the spring piston was obviously not lifting anything, but much more worrying was that the left hinge felt very wobbly.

Oddly enough, when I checked the schematics (see part 999 167 042 02) I realized my ball joints are flat and probably meant to be welded in place, while the schematics (and Rosepassion) show them threaded. Does anyone here know if there are differing versions?

I realized the left hinge (944 511 301 01) is very wobbly around its fixing point to the car body, and need to fix that (we managed a temporary fix but well, it's temporary). How do you get into the very tight corner where the hinge connects to the car body/structure? Has anyone here ever accessed this point?

Your help and ideas are very welcome.

How do you know your ball joints are flat? Could it be that they've been worn flat?

@wildcat: hmmm... they don't look worn out, like when the thread has been flattened by use. On both hinges they have been welded in place.

@Waylander: thank God those parts are readily available B) .

checking your part numbers

999 167 042 02 is now 999 167 051 03 lists 4 of those, body and hinge $4 each, and yes they are supposed to screw in not welded

the hinge complete 944 511 301 01 is $170

and if the Gas Struts are worn out at the ends, 944 511 351 03, 2 at $35

@Waylander: thanks, I suspect my previous classics Porsche so-called "mechanic" welded them in place  :whine: when I asked him to replace the gas springs. That was just before summer. Never again. Now I must understand how the hinge connects to the car chassis/body.

@Waylander are you certain the ball joints are never welded? Look at this picture:

On my '92 the pins on the hinges are welded, the ones on the body are bolted in place.

I bought the hinges I showed you in that picture above. As soon as my trusted mechanic returns from travelling abroad, I'll replace the old hinge(s) with the new ones.
