hesitating/missing/funny idle
#1

i don't know what is going on with my car. i need to monitor this more closely, but i believe it only happens when the engine is warm.

first symptom: the idle will oscillate between normal and about 4-500 rpms. what happens is it is at a normal idle then it drops down to this range and as soon as it gets down there it will immediately rise back up to normal. when it gets back up to normal it immediately drops back down. repeat.

second symptom: i will have hardly any power when accellerating in the 1.5k to 3k range. it feels like a vacuum leak or loss of compression. this doesn't happen as often as symptom one and it doesn't happen until after symptom one.

third symptom: car will miss. this will usually happen when i am cruising and i let my foot off of the accellerator and let the car roll in gear. this doesn't happen as often as second symptom.

this happened once before and i thought it was a vacuum leak. i got a piece of plastic tube and held one end of the tube up to my ear and the other in various regions of the engine compartment with the engine running and had a roommate rev the car lightly while i listened for the leak. i found nothing doing this test. then the problem just went away and now it is back.

all of my gauges read as normal, nothing looks or sounds out of the ordinary. my plan of action for now is to replace the DME relay, see what happens. if that doesn't do the trick i guess i'll replace the ignition rotor, coil, wires. does anyone know anything else it should be or anything that i can add to my plan of action?

thanks

mine did this one - rotor cap was scored pretty badly - i only get about 10k out of them before they show signs of wear

Sounds like it could be a fuel flow issue. Id replace the fuel filter if it has not been done recently. Throw in a can of Techron while your there. Other than that I would also guess the DME.

fuel supply will do that - just went through that while dialing in my regulator to tune to the new mods

dme not likely - usually on or off

there is a DIY out there on the filter and check valve change

I thought that too, but there have been reports of people with intermittent symptoms like this that have been cured with a new DME relay. Try that first.

dme relay maybe, but not likely the dme itself - no moving parts or changing contacts - that would be a fuel cutoff thing though that the relay may bring on - i had that happen on the way home from cleveland - on off on off - pain in the butt - car kept dying - i'd be driving, and then i wasn't

are there any stored fault codes, it does sound like a vacum leak, possibly the idle air control valve? any injector seals leaking?

someone else posted about leaky injector seals and i was thinking about this. how would i check for this? i haven't been able to get over to the garage and look at the car since i started this thread so i have nothing further on it. i have ordered the dme relay and rotor and i should be able to put them on this week. the thing that throws me off is that one minute the car will be running fine and the next it's pulling these shenanigans. this makes me doubtful about the fuel filter, but the car could probably use one anyway.
