Quote:6 HOURS!!!

was he down the local bar for most of that, I did mine in an small lock up garage with no main lights and no lift, in just over 2 hours, both sides!

come to think about it I did the belts and rollers and water pump in just over 6 hours..........

Wow, if you're able to do that in such a short time, you might consider opening a shop !    Although I don't  bother checking competitive prices on small jobs, I always benchmark big jobs ; so I called around and the cheapest estimate I received was from a  local German auto repair place was $ 600, but not guaranteed it'd stay within 20% if bolts are rusted, things don't move out of the way that easily, etc, etc..   Porsche dealer wants $ 1,200  ( parts not included ) .  So I just let it up to my mechanic figuring he might be pricier than the lowest shop around, but he's always done things to perfection...in spite of continuously cursing Porsche for their set-up design.

As for the belts, since you brought it up ..( and considering that my mechanic is really hesitant to do that job with the SC in the way..)  A N/A engine belt job at the dealer is  $ 2,500  ( not including parts - ).  A SC engine belt job ; they did not even want to provide an advance estimate..

How much is it to ship my car to and from the UK  ?  Lol, that might end up cheaper for these jobs ..

On the power steering hose, I guess high-pressure hoses have a special construction so it's not " just a simple piece of rubber "  and thus pricey..

We use Pirtek and get the hoses made up, so much cheaper than genuine

Take the old one in they remove the crimps take the fittings out, new hose replace the fittings and new crimps

Belt job

Water pump rebuilt by a company that's been doing water pumps for 50 years $130

All the other parts and belts $300 roughly and about 6-7 hours work.

That's about £850-£900 uk prices so pretty close in cost at an indie over here, dealer would be about £1500 or $2200

The dealers here charge £225 per hour labour,

So all about the same costs flash

Keep us posted . For big jobs like that it may be well worth it for me to drive the car down to SoCal. From mechanics, to contractors to just about everything else one can think of , services in this area ( at least the SF peninsula side of the bay ) seems to be 30-50% more than in SoCal..except for Beverly Hills perhaps, lol.

Back to the mounts : the old ones installed by the POs mechanic were the silver color metal kind.

And the bonus with the new ones : I reset my idle rpm back to normal as opposed to the 1200 where I had it before to mitigate the vibration. And just as flash said, even with the correct and brand new mounts the tiptronics do vibrate just a bit more than the six speeds . I'd say that difference , in my cars, is about 10 % right now ( just tried it with both engines when cold and when warmed up ) although the motor mounts in the six speed are in their fifth year, but only about 25 K miles..

Correction to my previous post ; somehow, for some reason, I was under the distinct belief that I changed the motor mounts in my six speed about five years ago. As it turns out, I did no such thing ..what's even more interesting is that the PO, and the one before him also never changed the motor mounts , according to the maintenance records which are fairly comprehensive . So tne still " smooth as silk " mounts in my six speed are over 20 years old, with 125 k miles on them, and the car has no vibration at idle whatsoever . As opposed to the brand new Porsche OE tip motor mounts in the tiptronic where the vibration is roughly 10 % more pronounced than the six speed.

Has anyone tried these? Mine are going south and I was looking for something a little more durable.

Hmm, Might have to look into this .

Theyre charging almost the same price as Porsche , so it would take a lot to convince me to take a chance on these And claiming virtually a lifetime guarantee. I will have to call them to see if they back that up with a lifetime warranty and what stipulations are .

quick update,

I talked to Kevin at 9 products America (the link above) and he has been selling these for about a year, engineered and manufactured by 9products in Finland. Claims to have sold a couple dozen sets with no complaints, and that there is a 2 yr warranty.

Interestingly, his website says you may feel more vibration at first, but a few hours driving will "break in the synthetic rubber and the vibrations will go away" Also they are supposed to be somewhat adjustable by loosening the top nut.

Its hard for me to imagine how a few hrs driving could have any effect to soften the initially harder vibrations, though.

Finally, flash has commented extensively about motor mounts on this forum, and likely tested all available products. But he did test these and said he pulled them out after about 10 minutes due to transmitting way too much vibration. In addition he found the threaded shaft bent under full engine torque.

If someone else wants to try these, it would be great to hear about your impressions in this or another topically related thread.

Regards,

--Michael

I have no knowledge of these Motor mounts, however, my current mounts are 24 years old (yup, just about ready to change them) and have worked pretty well until now. Unless there is overwhelming evidence that these will provide a magic carpet ride I'll probably stick with OEM. Not trying to dissuade anyone from giving these a try, JMHO.

My car is currently in the shop about to get both the motor mounts replaced (with OEM, of course - hoping NOT to pay for this job again anytime soon) as well as getting a leaking oil pan gasket replaced.

I'm not looking to spend any more than I already am, but do plan to keep this car for awhile, so are there any other "while you're in this far" preventative maintenance I should have done (like replacing the water pump when you're doing the belts)?

As far as I can tell from the records I have, this may be the first motor mount replacements this car  (92 with 150k miles) has had done - certainly so in last ~13 years (as far back as I have solid records).

The original mounts were made by Corteco, and are not available from them direct

If these from 9products are synthetic rubber they sound like Meyle ones

You cant buy hydro mounts from anywhere but Porsche

The comments about the 9products mounts were from roughly 3 years ago.   My mechanic originally quoted me with the Meyle mounts for this job, but after reading up on them here and on RL, I'm going with Porsche OEM as I'd rather spend the extra money now on the parts then have to pay (or perform) this much labor again.

Replacing the mounts and the oilpan gasket is a pretty significant chunk of labor, so I'd rather NOT repeat it soon, hence my question about "what else to do while in that deep".   ;-)

Not much else down there, except more gaskets and the starter alternator lead,

My bad I misread it, a couple of glasses of wine late night and internet, must stop that

Sounds good - thanks for NOT giving me any reason to spend even more money on repairs!

..and if this is the only trouble you get into on the internet late at night after a couple glasses of wine, then you're doing pretty well!  :-)

Couple thoughts:

If youre having the pan gasket replaced, Id definitely remove and inspect the oil pickup tube for cracks.

If you are the type of owner to worry about rod bearings, this is a good time to inspect/replace.

Inspect and consider replacing old rubber in the steering system as your mechanic will need to drop the cross member to access the pan. I think there are 2 bushings holding the steering rack that can be replaced.

I had my engine mounts replaced with Porsche OEM a while back and I was very pleased with the improvement. Highly recommend, worth the cost IMO.

If your guy can do it, and he has the sump off, the oil pickup should be strengthened, if the balance belt jumps teeth, the vibration crack the pick up, = no oil pressure

Mike RHD cars dont have rack mount rubbers, how strange
