yes, it says its -36*F for a second or two when I start the car, but then get a blank screen for the rest of the ride.

IMHO: -36 is probably as low as it can read. its control chip or thermosensor has crapped out or lost connection

Mine was doing the same thing. I asked one of the well known instrument repair shops on the West coast if the temp display could be repaired; they told me parts are no longer available, and they cannot repair these displays. I bought a used display from Parts Heaven (I have no connection with them) - I think I paid ~$50-$60 - and the replacement works fine. Saying the obvious, the problem with your car may be something other than a failed display unit, but what you're seeing is certainly consistent with a failed display.

If you decide to replace the display, be sure to observe the normal precautions when removing the instrument panel trim piece. Clark's garage has good documentaion of the procedure. Also, there's a flexible rubber tube that connects to the back (= front of the car) side of the trim piece. Unless someone knows something I don't, you need to remove the glove compartment to reattach this tube. That's easy to do, but you just need plan on doing that as part of this project.

Good luck.
