Finally, a 968 cab

After searching for about three years I finally found and bought a 968 cab.

Its a 1995 Aventurine Green Tiptronic cab with 39K miles.

Im located on the eastern side of Washington State.


Ever since I sold a very nice low miles 1990 S2 cab several years back I missed the way that S2 drove and looked and sounded, etc. I knew if I ever purchased another transaxle car it would be a 968, and then the bug to own one bit hard.

Between the rarity, fully developed/evolved design, and beautiful looks, Im convinced the 968 is a lesser known Porsche model that is still waiting to be fully discovered and appreciated. Perhaps the best part (for me) is that my wife has become a 968 enthusiast as well and this is one that we can share because of the Tiptronic.


Im looking forward to reading the DIY and troubleshooting sections of the forum and becoming a part of this little community of enthusiasts.

Thanks for the welcome from everyone!

I appreciate a model specific forum as the topics are directly relevant and it seems like the community is smaller too.

Az968, regarding the timing belt on my new car, it will need to be immediately looked at and likely replaced as the replacement history is unknown. Im familiar with the risks and damages surrounding timing belts on these cars.

The car is still 1,600 miles away from me at this point, and Im having a hard time with that as I want to jump in and go through (inspect) the car mechanically to see what needs attention.

Welcome, it looks like you are familiar enough with the cars to know what to do first. There are quite a few Tip owners on here, so your Tip related questions will have someone to help answer them. Make a few more posts and you will be able to post some pictures when the car arrives. Also, when using the search function, be sure to click the little white gear next to the search bar to get into the advanced search mode. It is a lot more specific and productive than the general search function.

 

And consider attending the West Coast Gathering if possible. We had a few cars from the PNW area last summer.

Thanks Matt, I am curious about the Tiptronic in these cars. It is the one mechanical component I dont really know much about.

I have already checked the fluid level, but I would like to compare notes with other Tip users to see whats normal operation and whats not.


I had read some about the West Coast Gathering, but I will pay more attention to it now.

Welcome, it took me three years to find my Cab, and yes I replaced timing belt right away as I had no records. West Coast Gathering is in the planning stages. Hope you can join us.

To finish introducing the car, it is the 18th to last 968 cab made for the US market, has a marble grey/black interior with a marble grey top (1 of 10).


Options are:

-XD4 Painted Center Crests

-249 Tiptronic

-398 17” Cup 2 Wheels

-437 8-way Power Drivers Seat

-490 Hi-Fi Sound with 8 speakers and amplifier

-692 6-disc CD Changer

-X24 Light Rootwood Tiptronic Shift Knob (1 of 5, I am told)

-718 Re-vin of 1994 car (as all 1995 cabs were)

The Tip Fluid level needs to be checked at 80 degrees C the same as a boxster does.

 

Rootwood gear knob, i think i have seen one picture of those in the last 4 years, rare as hens teeth

The one major component exclusive to the Tiptronic is the flex damper. They have a known history of tearing (rubber part). You would feel significant vibration.

Judd in Seattle here, with a 94 Cab Tip, white, grey top and interior.  Really like the color of your car. 

 

Welcome, good to hear about another NW 968 person.

 

I added the Design 1 supercharger shortly after purchase last year.  Did all belts at that time and was worried about the flex damper with the added power.  But the Tip is pretty gentle, starting out in 2nd, and IMHO the biggest risky behavior would be shock more than acceleration or normal use, like a full throttle passing maneuver at say 60 mph, with a sudden shift down to 2nd, not 3rd, with a lot of shock to the damper.  Ouch.

 

Anyway decided to not do the damper, and so far so good.  I mean it is a separate job from just about anything else, and I will do it if needed, whenever.  Famous last words.

 

We are going to the West Coast meet, hopefully see you there.

Yes, indeed .


Also, the tips will vibrate at idle slightly more than the six speeds. ( just a bit more, and not very pronounced but still noticeable, by comparison )

The Flex Damper has been replaced on my car according to a conversation I had with the shop in SC who did the work. I dont have any paperwork on that though.......

There is quite a bit of vibration at idle in gear, and although the motor mounts were also replaced I wonder if they used the correct mounts for a tip car. More sleuthing to do when I get the car home.

With the 8 of new snow we received overnight I am reminded its still winter here and I am wondering about my plan to trailer the car up. There are three mountain passes around 5,000-7,000 feet Ill have to go over.

The car is finally in Eastern WA more than a month after I bought it in AZ.

I drove my pickup down to AZ from WA, rented a car transport trailer and drove back with the car. I did have to wait out a couple of snowstorms that were hitting the areas I needed to drive through before I could leave AZ.

I have never trailered a car such a distance before (about 1,600 miles) but the trip was ultimately uneventful and satisfying to bring the 968 home.

I pulled it with a Chevy Silverado which was optioned for towing using a Uhaul auto transport trailer. Total weight of the car and trailer was approximately 5,700 lbs (trailer was pretty heavy).

I weighed the options of towing myself vs hiring a transport company and I am ultimately glad I did it myself.

The most difficult thing about trailering is backing up. The other thing I’ve noticed is the need to continually be on and attentive plus of course allowing for appropriate braking distances. I went out to the factory with my 968 and truck, my brother drove the truck out. We picked up the trailer and I drove it back in a blinding rain storm from Ohio. Talk about an initiation. Good move though to save the $.
