Amazon Green manual cab
#1

Hello all

I've recently bought my first Porsche, a 1993 Amazon Green 968.  I live in quite a remote place so bought the car unseen following a detailed specialist inspection.  It has one former keeper and 19 Porsche Centre service stamps.  I've just had a major service carried out including all belts, water pump and brake plate lift.

Really enjoying some other 968 forums and keen to get as much knowledge as possible as I've got quite a long list of repairs to do, some cosmetic, some electrical and of course mechanical.

All the best

Rob

Thanks Waylander

It's been great having access to the forum, loads on here for Cabs.  Love the way lots of Cab owners just use their tops in manual mode.  I'm going to try that relay blade blanking to get mine working with the engine running before I go manual.

Yes indeed, manual mode is the safer mode. Keep in mind though, once you have loosened the two bolts,

they would need to be replaced should you want to reverse your action. I don't think the manual covers this part.

Have fun in this forum. It has been a great info tool for me over the years.

Why manual?

The biggest reason, as I understand it, is that when (not if) the dual motors get out of synch, they will twist the main bow, causing the bow to break and possibly the broken ends to go through the canvas. The bow is NLA, so they have to be welded and repaired using reinforcements and bonding agents. The top is so easy to drop manually, I have not missed having mine disconnected for years. The only problem is that the motors "pull" the top down and with them disconnected you have to push it down to get the cover on.

Strangely enough, having become accustomed to Britisn tops, I am not bothered by the manual aspect. It almost seems like an old-school preparation for a top-down drive.

My S2 was in "manual mode", and I agree it was easy to open and close. However, my 968 roof still functions just fine ..... but is there any prior warning of impending catastrophe?

Not that I know about, but Im sure that there are some maintenance issues around the hinges and folding bows

They must need some kind of lube after 30 years, all the rubber parts should get a good coating of gummi fledge at least 2 or 3 times a year

https://www.micksgarage.com/d/dash-rubbe...gIRUvD_BwE

Also good on coupe door seals and hatch and sunroof, cuts the squeaks down a lot and makes all the rubber bits last longer

The last time I looked the folding bows were still available but that was a couple of years ago, and they were $900 a side

I have a pair of broken ones in the shed, they are made of magnesium alloy so real hard to fix

I was thinking the same thing around lubing up, I'll need to have a good look as the mechanism is somewhat covered up by the inner lining.

On the Gummi Pflege I'm using liberal amounts of a Liqui Moli version on every bit of rubber trim I can find.

Well I just had a check, the main folding bows still available

941 561 201 11 and 941 561 202 11, at $907.00 each,

don't do what a friend of mine did, drive off and give it large without the roof locked down correctly, wind snapped it open, shattered both bows, 2K to fix

used a few different makes of Gummi Pflege, found the original German one to be the best
