94 Cab in NE Florida
#1

Hello all,

We have a 94 Cab black on tan that we would like to get back on the road, unfortunately the car has been sitting for some time and need to get it going again. We are not really new to the car scene as we have been around Jaguars and BMW's for a while. We like to DIY most of our work and heard this was a great place to come for information on the 968.

Hi! Welcome to the club. I've been DIY rennovating a 93 cab myself. Do you have the service history of the car?

Even if you do, the first place to start if the car's been sitting is the timing belts - recommended replacement interval is 30k miles or 3 years.

Welcome! You'll find a lot of information here to help you renovate your 968.

As mbardeen stated, those timing and balance shaft belts are suspect if they've been sitting under tension, and if the timing belt breaks, you're looking at a lot of money to repair bent valves and related damage. Especially each time you start the car, that belt is under a lot of stress and even belts that *look* good can break, so you'll want to get that taken care of, as well as new rollers and perhaps a water pump if the car has high mileage.

Also look at the large cable that connects behind the alternator. It should have insulation on it, and if the wire is bare copper, then the insulation has failed and fallen off (it gets really crispy). With no insulation, there's a chance that wire will short and engage the starter, walking your car across the garage or into someone at the mall. There's a replacement cable available made of better stuff, search on "Robby".

Good luck!

to further continue on the starter cables, there are multiple wires in that sheath. you have to peel the outer covering back to see the insulation on each of those wires.

Welcome! And I second the recommendation to take a good look at the starter cable, and replacing them if they look suspect. I just replaced mine, and am very happy with the quality of the replacement cables, and service I got from Robby (his company is Higher Connections, a site sponsor).

... or *complete* lack thereof! Mine was bare from end to end, and the solenoid cable had a bunch of cracks in it already! And my car is one of the best examples I've seen as far as being in good condition regarding the plastic and rubber on the rest of the car.
