Headlights ON in "down" position?
#1

I snagged this picture from the CABS gallery from this site because I am curious about something...

It seems that the headlights are "ON" while they are in the "down" position! Is that possible?

If so, can someone please post how, since I would love to have that option available to me...

The lights come on (at least in my car) on the first posiotion of the light switch although on this picture they look quite bright but this could be due to the dark surrounding.

What ?! This just made me run down to the completely dark garage to see if my lights also come on at the first position..they don't.

So now I wonder if this 1 is an option only for European cars, 2. My car has a short circuit or 3 Jaap ' s car has short circuit ;-). I,m going to guess it's 1 :-). Bummer, it would have been great if it did that, even though it would be a useless feature ( since you can use the fog lights at the first position for visibility purposes ) but great for photos like the one in this thread

Just to clarify, in the first position they come on (together with the rear lights) but its not the normal driving light. Over here It is called city lights or parking lights so not as bright as the normal driving lights. There is a seperate bulb (only 5W) for that purpose, the normal and high beam share the other bulb.

Not even the faintest sign of any headlights at the first position in U.S cars ( or at least in my car... ) just the " parking " lights front and rear.

Jaap is correct. My Jag had citylights (which serves the same purpose as driving around with your park lights on) and used a low watt bulb. The advantage of city lights is that the turn indicator is an on/off type instead of the US bright/normal twin filament. I would love to have this option as well as a rear fog light, although I don't think the latter was an option.

My car has a rear foglight however you can only switch it on if the front fogs are on and the front fogs only turn on when the headlight switch is at least in the first position (ie city lights).

Yup, our fog lights will only work if the switch is at least at the first position also.. Rear fog light ? Where exactly is that one ? Lol, this is just weird ..what reason drove Porsche to build that difference in Euro cars ? Do some countries regulations requires daytime lights and/or fog lights on at all time ?

My SAAB also has a switch for a "rear fog light", which activates one of the rear tailights to shine brighter (almost as if the brake light is on) to serve as early warning in fog conditions. Must be a European regulation.

In Canada regulation currently requires "daytime driving lights" (DDL), unless the vehicle is older than when the regulation came into effect. As a result, my 968 (a US car) did not require me to install DDL when I imported it 2 years ago.

I would like to have the European option of "city lights" (headlights ON in position #1 without headlights tilting up - as in picture of post #1), since I regularly turn my headlight switch to position #1 and then turn the fog lights ON and use them to mimick DDL.

Anyone here know what can be done to install the European "city lights" option in a North American 968?

I'll have to check but my fogs are dual element and I am sure that they are permanently on as parking/DDL

That would make sense, since yours was sold originally as a Canadian 968, and therefore had to come with DDL.

I was NOT required to install DDL when I imported my (1993) 968 two years ago and had it inspected and certified. My son imported a 1991 Acura NSX at about the same time and he had to have DDL installed. It sometimes depends on who you come across in the "certification" process...

I am surprised you were not required to install the daytime running lights. I imported my '94 in 2007 and was required. There is a relay which is "suppose" to be available for Canadian models, but the dealership has never been able to get it. I did however find a great link which showed how to wire up the DRL and as such, I can now have DRL plus fog lights with my Hi beams. I have never had a car with such great lighting until now. Usually the fogs are disabled when the Hi beams are turned on.

Does this mean your headlamps go ON in the "nested" position?

(similar to the picture in post #1)

If so... I would like additional info.

The headlights will go on in the down position if you flick the high beams, pull turn signal stalk towards you (i.e. Silent horn).

I have searched the web using key words like "city lights", Porsche 968, euro, etc. and don't see any details regarding them. If there was a way to incorporate the low wattage bulb in the headlight and have it come on in the retracted position, the look would be fantastic. Anyone ever see any details on the web regarding these; especially any of our european or uk members?

Will they stay on if you move the high beam signal stalk in the " locked " position ? going to test that right now...;-)
