Replacing seal for roof trim over doors
#1

The rubber seals on the metal trim piece that runs along the roof just above the doors is starting to degrade on my car.
The replacements are about $20 a piece and I am considering adding this to my to-do list.
Part # from the PET is 944-559-707-00, but it doesn't show any details on how the part is attached.
I'm concerned that water is leaking through the seal, though I'm not seeing any issues with it. I'm not sure where the water would go if it is...

Has anyone else out there replaced this seal?
Does anyone know how this metal trim strip is removed?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jamie

The trim piece is actually plastic. Cover a screwdriver with tape or a cloth and gently pry the trim piece at the rear, and it will gradually lift out along its length. When you reinstall with a new gasket, it helps if the gasket is warm and supple.

Wow. You're right. It is plastic. I just tested it with a magnet.
So I just pop it out. Sounds easy.
Do I have to worry about snapping pins or any other gotchas?

Thanks for the info!
Jamie

Darryl,
Detail Day sounds like a great time. I would love to come, but can't commit yet.
Will let you know soon.

Well, after 7 months, I finally got around to doing this job.

Unfortunately, it wasn't quite so easy as I had hoped.

There are 7 clips that hold the trim in place on each side.
After trying and trying to get the driver's side to pop off, I gave up and moved to the passenger's side.
That side started to come off very easily. It turns out the first clip was broken.

Most of the clips were very hard to release, and when I was done, 5 of the 7 were broken.
I'll be ordering a bunch of replacements. Which I believe are part number 999 591 732 02.
I'd advise anyone planning to replace the rubber seal to order a few clips. They are only $1.50 at Pelican and probably a bit less from Sunset. Wish I had ordered them with the seals to save on shipping costs.

Anybody have a better technique for getting these things off?

Also interesting is that the trim piece appears to be metal, but not ferromagnetic. Aluminum?
jlm968 had said they were plastic. Could they be plastic on later cars, and aluminum on earlier ones?

Well, for now I popped the trim back on with 2 clips and will make sure to keep the passenger's side door closed until I get the replacement clips.

Too many things to get done between now and Hershey...
(Well not as many as Flash at least)

Got the driver's side done last night.

For anyone else who is considering the replacement of these seals... BEWARE

The trim piece is aluminum on my car. The clips that hold it in place do NOT let loose easily.
I'm still curious if anyone can confirm jlm968's assertion that the trim is plastic. A plastic piece would certainly be easier to remove.

Like the passenger's side, on the driver's side I also broke most of the clips.
The amount of force needed to get the trim loose was frighteningly high. In the process I ended up with some gouges in the trim piece and some paint chipped off the roof behind the trim from prying, even though I used a large screw driver with a lot of masking tape to soften the edge. The trim piece also bent a bit from the force needed to get it loose. Straightening the trim was almost impossible without deforming the cross section.

Other than that, it went smoothly

There has got to be a better way.

In the end the result looks great, though there is a slight gap in one spot due to the bent trim that is almost invisible (but I'll know it's there )

BTW, I ordered replacement trim clips from Sunset at less than 1/3 the cost of what my local P dealer parts department quoted me... and they got them to me quicker too!
I love those guys.

Jamie - just tacking on to your tread - does anybody know the part number for the clips that hold the trim on? My passenger side rear clip has broken and needs to be replaced...also any idea where I can get it - I'm thinking sunset...

Sam,

999-591-732-02
Got mine from Sunset. They were relatively cheap, and shipping was not expensive because they are small.
I bought 14 (7 per side) to replace all of them.
If you're taking off the trim, you should expect to find several broken clips.
I recommend buying a full set, as they are less than a buck a piece.

I hope you have better luck than I did with the replacement.
I still haven't gone back and finished the passenger's side trim.
