Hard-wiring a radar detector

Any tips on how to hard-wire a radar detector? I think the previous owner tapped into the interior light above the rear view mirror, but I wanted to solicit opinions before tearing into it. My cigarette lighter has an intermittent short, so rather than spending time tracing this problem, I thought it would be easier to try tapping into a source of voltage to directly connect my new-for-Christmas Valentine.
