Hall Sender Assembly Group Buy
#1

Hi,

As I posted in the other hall sender thread, this thread will cover the hall sender group buy- who is in, how to pay, etc. Sorry it took so long to get the parts in (I've had the senders themselves sitting on my desk at work since November), I was trying to avoid having to buy a reel of the connector pins. These ended up bumping the cost up a bit and I had to amortize this cost across the run of 50 senders (although the reel gives us way more pins than we need.) The connector housings cost as much as the sender itself also. Anyways, the complete assemblies include the following:

Hall sender

Crimped connector pins

Heat shrink over hall sender wires

Connector housing

Rubber boot

One small wire tie

You will reuse the backing plate and a small grommet from the original sender. Here is a picture of the new sender after installation onto the backing plate:

The final cost shipped (lower 48 states) is $30/unit. I wish they could have been a bit cheaper but things just started adding up (not to mention shipping boxes, etc.) This is still way, way cheaper than the $200+ assemblies from the dealer. If you would like an extra connector housing and set of pins (there was one request for this for use with another sensor) that is $7.50 shipped with a sender(s). (I am charging a nominal price for extra pins.)

To order, first make sure you are on the reserved list. Please do not make any payments if you are not on the reserved list nor please do not make payments for more than you have reserved. If you would like to be removed from the reserved list or drop to 1 sender just post in this thread to let me know. Of course, no one is obligated to buy these senders even if you are in the reserved list- just please give me the courtesy of letting me know that you no longer want a sender so I can remove you from the list as there are a few people on the wait list. Send me a message if you are ready to order and I'll send you my mailing address and PayPal account name so that you can pay via check or PayPal. Once you have confirmed and payed you will be moved to the confirmed list. Once I ship your parts I will indicate this in the shipped list. I will start assembling shipping the units later this week. Thanks!

Brett

is that preassembled (other than the back plate)? or do we have to solder and such?

i didn't hop in on the list, only because i didn't want to have to put something together (i have enough of those projects already) and it looked like it was just the pieces with "assembly required"

if it's assembled, put me on the waiting list

Flash,

I am cutting the leads to the appropriate lengths, installing the heat shrink, and crimping the pins on (requires special tool.) Basically, I am doing all of the assembly that can be done without the backing plate and grommet which are reused from the original assembly. It takes a minute to drill out the rivets from the backplate. You cut the original lead in half to slide off the grommet. Next slide the grommet onto the new assembly. This is a little bit tricky just because you have to push the pins through individually and it is a tight fit. Next you just slide the boot on and slide the pins into the connector housing (they pop in). The only slightly challenging aspect of the assembly is crimping the new sensor into the backplate assembly. I used a vice and a small bolt to do this. All told, there is probably 20 minutes of assembly work.

Just a suggestion but I think if you set the resolution lower on your camera/photos it will make the photos smaller on the forum thread which will make it easier to read, won't have to scroll side-to-side.

I'm on the reserved list for (2) but I'll drop that to (1) to allow someone else (JWW) a sender.

I'll be paying via PayPal when you provide your account name.

Thanks again for doing this, much appreciated.

EDIT - PM sent to Brett 6/6/06

hi Brett - yes, I am still in for the 2 hall senders and one of your odometer gears! I'll send you PM for PayPal

Thanks again for putting this all together for us - it's a godsend to have 968 enthusiasts like you front end everything and make it possible to keep these cars on the road at reasonable prices.

I hadn't been following the thread this one references

(was that the one about the Euro?)

and this one's pretty hard to read, but I'm very interested.

Update:

Those who are paid up as of today have had their items shipped. (OK, they are boxed up and labels are printed. They will actually go out tomorrow.) I will finish the installation instructions during the first part of next week. Also, I will be out of town until Sunday evening for those who try to contact me between now and then.

OK, I'm back in town now. Those whose payments are received by noon Thursday, June 15, will have there units sent out that Thursday. As of Friday, June 16th, I will be out of town until June 25. If you can get your payment in this week that would be great. If you are on the list but would like to opt out, please let me know as there is still someone on the waiting list right now. Thanks.

Brett I have PM'd you on this but had no response. I am interested in buying one but don't know if I can: this group buy apparently only went public after the participants' list had been closed. Please advise. Thank you.

Sorry, I've been getting alot of PMs. I can still add you to the list but you would be on the wait list. The wait list has been moving pretty quickly. 5 or so people have already been pumped up from the wait list to the confirmed list. Let me know for sure and I'll add you to the wait list. Thanks.

Brett,

Is the pin out the same for this sensor as the OEM sensor. Seems to me that the pinout from the new sensor and the OEM sensor had V- and Vo reversed. Is that the case?

The correct wiring for the new sender is as follows:

Red to pin 1

Black to pin 3

Green to pin 2

The positions on the connector housings are labelled.

Brett, I just wanted to let you know the package with the two Hall kits and the odometer gear arrived. Today I'm putting my car into the operating room for the "surgery" of replacing the dash, during the process of which I'll exchange the odometer gears (along with quite a growing list of other things to do).
