Hall Sender availability?
#1

Hello everyone,

I know a few here have replaced the hall sender and I am in need of one. Sooner than later as I need to get this car smogged.

Sunset quoted 184.00 but 10 days to me since it is an SO item.

Local dealer wants 260.00 but 4-5 days.

Tried Paragon, Pellican, Tweeks (MAM), Automotion(Perf Prod), Vertex.

I swore I saw one advertised for 134.00 in stock online from someone but I did not need one at the time.

Any other suggestions for a new unit?

thanks

Lee

the thing is tiny - i would think for another 12 bucks or so it could be overnighted

The problem is, nobody has it in stock. 5 days just to Sunset

Sunset will have parts shipped faster but they charge 20% or so more.

Paragon gets parts overnight from Porsche anyway. I suggest calling Paragon again.

I just had mine replaced last week. Sunset was $184 and 10 days, as above. I didn't wait either and paid full price at Niello Porsche (less 15% discount for PCA members), who had one in stock. 916-625-8300. After Sunset, they are my second choice.

I might add that usual suspects - Vertex, Zim's, Paragon, Performance, Mid-America, Pelican - all said "dealer only" part.

Am told by Dave Griemann that bad hall sender automatically retards timing 6 degrees with the stock chip; not so with a performance chip, which causes engine ping like crazy.

If you are running the stock chip with a bad hall sender, fixing it feels like a swift kick in the pants - HUGE improvement.

a difference in reaction between chips?

cave? is that right? please explain this one - does this mean i do not need my hall sensor, and therefore never need to worry about it?

Bob - Confirm with Dave, but I think the hall sender is necessary. Lack of a good one was causing my detonation problems once I installed the Speed-6 Chip. Replacing the sender gave the Speed-6 chip something to react to. According to Chris, the Speed-6 chip "most likely" ignores a bad sender and "guesses" to what point the timing should be advanced.

The stock chip is programmed to retard timing if a hall sender signal can't be found, which explains why I got such a huge performance gain - even with the stock chip - once the hall sender was fixed.

BTW, purely coincidental that my hall sender toasted about 12 hours before I installed the chip. Bad sender + performance chip = detonation (in my case) no matter how high the octane.

Of course all this begs another question: Why didn't the knock sensors do the job that the performance chip didn't when the detonation was present? Perhaps the performance chip won't react to that either? Just thinking out loud, enquiring minds, and all that...

Think of the hall sensor as a breaker plate for the ignition system. It tells the computer precisely where the valvetrain is so it can fire the coil and injectors accordingly. The only other way the computer knows where the crank / valve train is by the reference sensor on the flywheel, but that system is not as accurate so the timing is dialed back by 6 degrees as a precaution. So you definitely need the hall sensor!

How exactly the chips make decisions on how to set timing is a question for the programmers.

Actually the hall sensor is NOT a precise measuring device for crankshaft angle. It simply tells the engine computer where the camshaft is in relation to the crankshaft. This is only one of two locations - you can think of it as even or odd. This is due to the fact that the crankshaft is rotating at twice the speed of the camshaft. Therefore the flywheel sensor can indicate a precise angle using a reference point (missing teeth.) However, it needs the camshaft hall sender to tell it what the phasing is.

The crankshaft speed sensor is actually very accurate, better than many. It is a 60 tooth (well, 58 with 2 missing for reference) configuration. This gives a tooth for every 6 crank degrees. The DME interpolates using position and current angular velocity to determine intermediate angles. The hall sender, in contrast, only has one "tooth" (although in this case it's not really a tooth).

Regarding the hall sender itself, for $184-$264 dollars I would tell them to shove it. That's alot of money for $1 worth of obsolete electronics. Hall senders are readily available from a number of electronics manufacturers. I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to find a modern hall sender to replace the factory unit. The cost would be a tiny fraction of the factory unit and one could use a more modern, less failure prone device.

Thanks Brian,

Hmmm, I was told that there was only one left in the US and that I got it late this afternoon. Others would come from Germany. Not sure if that is accurate or not, but I got it the same day I ordered it as I must be next to a Porsche warehouse. I think I will put it in this evening.

You guys might want to save your old senders as others could use them as cores for rebuilds. Hall sender replacement

New Porsche hall sender is updated over the POS Siemens unit. Same part number. Much beefier as seen in the pics. Another part number is in the pics in case someone can find it for less than Porsche.

I will install it tomorrow. Spark plug seal took off in the mouth of my Pit and is now in 2 pieces. Plus 20 minutes because the rocket scientist PO put gobs of silicone on the rubber valve cover gasket and it required a good cleaning.
