What parts to buy
#1

I have about $ 150 store credit at Pelican Parts and don’t know what to use it for ; I have a new ( spare )  DME relay,  new spark plug wire set , new distributor and rotor , and just trying to figure out what to buy with that $ 150 for something to keep as a spare .   What’s a known common failure component on our cars that I should buy and keep on the garage shelf until I need it ?

Having a brain fa*t at the moment and can’t think of anything other than the HCV but I changed that to a metal one , I replaced the coolant reservoir a few years ago ( they have a tendency to crack ) , and for even regular maintenance parts I’m ok for now ; my brake pads are at 75% , so are the rotors ,  timing and balance belts are fairly new also, spark plugs fairly new … so what now ?     Ay suggestions ?

The tiny little gears in the odometer that melt and render the odometer non-functioning.   This is a common issue with our cars that I recently repaired on mine.  The set of two gears are about $25 each.

Power steering rack? They are hard to find at a reasonable price and when you can get one they are expensive.

Rebuilt units just a few years ago were $300. Now they can be as much as $1,200...if you can find one. That's without installation costs.

A proper stock duty rated pressure plate.

I’ll check to see how much Pelican might sell the racks for  ( if they even carry those ),  but I’m not too concerned about that ; when and if it breaks down I’ll just deal with it .  If they can be rebuilt , I’m hoping I can find a source to rebuild it at that time.    For now I’m just looking to spend that credit store credit on less expensive items , just so it’s not sitting there on the account ..  Aame thing with pressure plates.  Guessing that’s a high ticket item .. ?

Headlight and turn signal fluid? I know I run out frequently.

You shouldn't lose fluid and "run out" as it's a closed system.

You better check your headlights and turn signals for leaks.

Haha, good idea.  Tongue    Maybe a spare flux capacitor  would also be a wise purchase ..  Blush

Got a nice car cover? I don’t know if PP has Black Friday/Christmas sales, but if they do it might be nice to get a good cover.

It might be nice to get a new water pump. You’ll need one eventually and they get more expensive every time I replace mine. (Then again, there are lots of places that sell them cheaper)

Yes, I have two very nice covers , so I’m all set , but never thought of a spare water pump ..I’ll look into that .  Years ago I heard almost all of them are rebuilt units, new ones are not available, is that true ?

New ones are pretty much the only ones available. Don't know if you could even find a rebuilt one.

With tax and shipping it'll probably be $300+
