Is the procedure identical to that of 944?



It is not necessary to remove rear axle-trailing arms, right?

No, all you have to do is unbolt the inner CV joints. Make sure you have a good quality 12-point socket, and that you seat it very well onto the bolt heads before you start turning, as these bolts are very easy to strip, especially with the rubber boot pushing on the socket. I would recommend buying new bolts. The other tricky part of the job is figuring out how to unbolt the pieces (not sure what they're called) that the half-axles attach to which are sealed by the seals you're planning to replace - you have to hold them so they don't spin when removing the bolts that attach them to the transaxle. I built some plates that I attached to a pair of the CV joint bolt holes, and to another bolt somewhere on the transaxle. It actually took some time to get them exactly the right shape. Maybe there's an easier way to do this, but I couldn't think of any. It definitely cured my leak, which a shop misdiagnosed as coming from my drive shaft input seal, which requires removal of the transaxle to replace. Good luck.
