Half cover for cab
#1

On the 968 West Coast tour, one of the participants (Bill Panzer) had a great half top cover that covers from the windshield to the rear hatch with tabs that fit under the rear trunk lid and straps that attach to the door handle. I thought this was a terrific cover and  I did some research.  I had a great deal of trouble finding it until I used the part number on Bill's cover.  Some sites indicated it was unavailable but I think I found a source of these half covers.  I have ordered one (not very expensive $60) and am told it will be delivered by 8/2.  The source is:

http://www.carid.com/covercraft/block-it...011sg.html

I will everyone know if it is as expected.

I got the cover. It took about a month for delivery and it looks great.  I'll send a pic of it for those who are not familiar.

It's one of the first things I bought when I got my Cab.  I also have one for my 996 cabrio as well.  Google "cockpit cover" and you'll find a few companies that make them for practically all makes and models.

I think they sell it, but that's not the brand.  I think it's Covercraft.  Let me follow my own advice and do some googling..... Smile

Kaj,

The one shown in that picture has different door straps that the one I purchased several years ago. Please take a picture and post here when you receive yours...mine is long overdue for replacement.

Thanks,

A couple of pictures of the newly arrived Tonneau cover from Covercraft with comments:

Light an easy to install with two Velcro straps that loops around the door handle. Will keep heat out but will not handle rain or heavy moisture. The rear locks in place inside the trunk lid. I guess to prevent theft. It's a one minute install/removal and is great for the summer outdoors. $60 from Covercraft.

Hi,

Just reporting back in. The new cover arrived and I like it very much. Fewer straps to mess with and covers equally as well as the old cover. Just slip the front under the windshiel wipers, two tabs in the trunk and 2 straps around the door handles.

Nothing dragging across the mirrors or the trunk to wheel wells.

JMHO,

Jay

Jay, what brand did you get? I have the one Kaj has, and it works pretty well, but I would like other options for when mine gets old and ratty.
Ahhh, just saw other post in different topic heading. Disregard my previous post.

The one I bought has Velcro straps around the door handles, mirrors, wipers, and the two tabs that go in the trunk. Takes a few extra seconds to mount/dismount, but it stays in place in a stiff breeze.

Also, I lived in Las Vegas when I bought mine and the first one only worked with the top down. I called them and explained 115° degrees in the shade to them and they made me another, slightly modified one that fits over to top as well. I can't remember the fabric, but it's the aluminized waterproof one. After 12 years, it's lost its water Resistence, so I spray it with Nikwax/Techtron every season.

I can't remember the brand but I think it was California Car Covers. I'll check when I get it out of storage in the Spring and post it.

dlearl476, it would be great if you did that! I wasin a restaurant last summer and had the cover on. No rain was called for and suddenly a rain cloud formed (like Charlie Brown) over my car and rained for about 5 mins. Errrr! I wonder if that would have worked with the chassis brace to keep the interior dry? I would to see a pic and know the price. Thanks

Hi Ernie,

I have a cover similar to Kaj's and it is a little small with the chassis brace/roll bar. This year I think I will add some fabric to the front to extend the forward edge so it will be less likely to pull out from under the wiper arms. Other than that, I like the product and I use it a lot.

MCL968, I have that cover too. I really like it a lot, but would really like to have a cover that could shed a little water, in the event of a shower. I have a "waterproof" cover for my Jeep Wrangler and it stays bone dry in the vehicle. I have thought about buying another one of those tops and customizing it for the 968. I don't suggest using it instead of the top, but it would be nice to pop on if a passing shower may be around versus unbooting the top, etc. Maybe I'm just being lazy though?!

Mike in Portland used the center out of a full car cover to make one that had mirror pockets and a little more coverage on the sides. I understand that it worked very well. A possible idea if you have an old car cover laying around.

The only issue I have had was on the tie down to the wipers. When really windy the wipers will not hold it. Considering adding a fastener to the wipers. RAIN...not my concern. We have none from May to October.

In town we have these new-fanged contraptions the kids are all calling "washing machines." You put yer stuff inside, add some soap, push some buttons and a little later yer stuff comes out all clean-like. You don't have to go down to the river or nothin'.

Seriously, throw it in the washer, let it air dry, spray it with some UV protectant/water proofing stuff and Bob's yer Uncle.
