Cab top won't lock
#21

Looks like a 911 part number? DCAuto has them, but at $50 each.

I found two sets on Ebay. I bought one set and then brand new ones showed up so I bought them too. The 964 handles work fine, but I'm not sure the 911 prt number is right for our cars. The new latches were worth every penny, it's like having a new car. No rattles, air, leaks. I forgot how tight the 968 can be. I have one rubber seal on at the rear of drivers side window that has separated a little. I'm sure the seals are expensive as I just replaced all the rubber in my 80 911 and it was crazy how much they get for seals, and there are no where near as much rubber as the cab. That's a project for another year.

I'm going to start driving the 968.I still haven't replaced the M3 so I am putting way too many miles on the Boxster. It's not the best daily driver anymore. The lightweight flywheel makes a racket in stop and go traffic. I've only put 1000 miles on the 968 in the last two years and most of that was short trips to keep the battery charged and the oil moving. I have to go to Knoxville today, about 250 miles by interstate or 180 across the mountain. Think I'll take it across and down the dragon. I still haven't replaced the windshield and the crack is moving. I have two choices in Atlanta, both dealers, and I hate to go to either place for anything, but none of of the glass shops will touch it. I suppose that means I'll have to order one from Germany. Does anyone know what they get for a windshield at Sunset? It doesn't look to me like it would be any more trouble than other windshields. My indy said it as no big deal, but he didn't want to do it either. Has anyone done one themselves? Any special issues that would scare the glass shops away?

Rubber seals are NLA. I believe the 944 windshields are all that are available any more? Not sure why the indy's wouldn't touch them...

(Mike , white cab in Beaverton) . I found I had an alignment issue with mine on the drivers side , before I pulled the top down tight I had to take my finger a align the roller so it fit flush and then it locks into pleace . Worn rollers , haven't looked to see if it can be tightned .

Good luck .

the roller assembly is known to get out of whack. the front rail sheet metal bends and causes a misalignment. i have had to bend it back into place on a couple of cars.

The cab windshields are different I think, but I can't figure out why the glass shops won't do it. I think it is just because the windshield is not in their database, so they don't have any information. If I can buy one from Sunset I may talk one of the shops into it. Looking at the bottom it appears it would be easier than most windshields. I would probably buy new trim too, if it's available.

as i said, as of february, when i last checked, the windshields are all still available. the rubber surround seal for the cab was too. i never checked the one for the hardtop (if it's different)

cab windshields are 60mm shorter than hardtop windshields

Do the OEM tools work? I had this experience. The tools wouldn't connect because the pins or keys had somehow moved or been bent and the tools wouldn't connect properly. I bought a single socket and permanently attached it to a flexible hand that would allow me to bend it into place. Cost about $15 at the hardware store and its actually a better tool because it elininates the guesswork.

they work perfectly if things are right, and you get the left and right correct

Ran into this problem when I tried to raise my top a few weeks ago...I keep the top down all summer long and just put a car cover on the car at night. As usual, went to the website and found others had the same problem and read the solutions. Tried adjusting the forks but did not solve the problem...only created a gap between the top and the rear side of the side glass! Next, examined the front bow and noticed the driver's side seemed a little off so I bent it slightly and now my top latches perfectly! Only minor challenge was getting the interior panel off with the chassis brace in place. With a little extra time I was able to remove and reinstall the panel. Just another example of how essential this site is to those of us with limited knowledge and experience working on cars. Thanks to all those who share their knowledge and information to keep our cars running!

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread. I experienced a problem with locking the cab top for the first time a couple of weeks ago (cold front). Read this thread a couple of times, looked over the pictures and was able to repair the top latches and get it squared away.

Drove the car with the top up for the first time since buying it in May. Pretty impressed with how quite the car was. Quite a bit quieter than my 87' 911 with the top up.

Thanks to all!!

I know this is an old thread but it just helped me with my car. The proverbial passenger side top latch wasn't engaging properly.

After looking at post #13, the second pic, I decided to explore the "inards" of the front of the top. Nothing looked very out of line when I loosened up the the liner ( didn't take it all the way off). But the sheet metal lip that is on the forward edge looking a tiny bit bent ( I mean tiny). I took a long landscape spike and placed the head against the lip and gave it a couple of taps with a rubber mallet.

Upon tightening the liner back into place and closing the the top the latch easily engaged. Now both latches work as they should and I don't have to worry about the top doing something it shouldn't do when I'm driving.

Thanks for the info guys.
