Groaning Power Steering
#1

Changed some of the PS hoses and had the rack out to put on new tie rods, and now have a pretty steady groaning noise coming from the PS system (louder when turning the steering in either direction).

Assume this is air in the system, so my question is, how long does it take for all the air to work its way out? When I first got back together I had the car up on jack stands and turned the wheel all the way in both directions (wheels off the ground) with the engine running. I thought that would get most of it out, but the sound doesn't seem to have lessened. The fluid level is above the lower mark on the diptube, which is where it should be cold.

Will it gradually quiet down? Is there any way to bleed it faster than just letting the operating pressure push the air up into the reservoir? Could I have pinched a hose when I reinstalled the rack and have caused a restriction in the flow?

Thanks for the link. My steering was growning too. Read all the info on the link, which notes Delcron IID ATF. Went shopping for that but was unable to find anthing but Delcron III. So I called my mechanic. He said Delcron IID is the same as Delcron III. I already had that in my garage so I topped the resevoir up last night and problem is gone.

Thanks again

The groaning from my PS pump stopped when I replaced the fluid that came with the car with new ATF. I wondered if the previous owner(s) may have used standard power steering fluid instead.

FWIW, the noise went away by itself. And I'm using Mobil One ATF, which I believe is the Dexron III spec. Someone recommended this in another post a while back

The air that was trapped in the system worked it's way out on it's own then, just make sure to verify it is full and have fun.
