Power steering reservoir
#1

Has anybody had a problem with their power steering reservoir leaking?? I washed the whole engine compartment to find oil leaks and it appears 1 of the leaks is coming from the reservoir, right at the seam. Is this commonl???

Many tiny cracks developed in mine. replaced a few hoses and the reservoir. cleaned up the mess, then looked for dissolved rubber under the car...pelican has the parts

You know I noticed it appears one of the lines goes directly to the power steering cooler with no breaks. Do you have to buy the whole thing to replace the line???

Also my reservoir looks perfect however its just weeping out of the seam just enough to make a mess of the engine compartment

It is all one unit, but I removed mine and brought it to a hydraulic shop and had them replace the rubber portion, was only like $25. The reservoir has been known to develop leaks, it's good to replace it anyways as it has a filter in the bottom of it. You also ought to replace the other rubber line off of there, you can get that at one of normal parts vendors. That should take care of leaks from that area for a while.

Yes, weeping is very common. Once you get the leak fixed and everything cleaned up, prepare yourself to replace the sway bar bushings in the no so far distant future. Depending on how long it's been that way, the dripping power steering fluid will eventually cause the passenger side bushing to swell and "rupture"...ask me how I know. Might as well do both sides while you have the sway bar off.

Hey Darryl,

Thanks for the tip. I had installed new MO30 sway bars with new bushings this weekend. Any idea how much a new bottle is???

Thanks

It seems that the earlier PS reseviors with the "clear" top half tend to leak at the "mid-way" seam.

As such, on my 93, I just replaced the resevoir with the Porsche Recommended "updated" all black unit. I also replaced the lines and clamps. My tech and I came up with some clamps that do a wonderful job (without being too tight!).

Cleaned up the couple of drips. All done; and the 968 is completely dry!!!!

Update is highly recommended!!!

Not sure what the $385 was for, but you can buy it at Paragon for $27.75.

Hey Porsche,

My 968 is a 93' as well however i have the black bottom with clear top, dont know if thats the same one that failed on you??

The power steering lines seems to be connected to the power steering cooler,do you have to replace the entire thing just to replace the line?? What kind of clamps did you install??? Because the bottle is leaking its tough to tell if the lines are leaking or the clamps because it dripping down onto the lines. But my luck im sure they are and I want to prepare myself to replace them.

Thanks

Yes, the clear top's have been known to leak, so go ahead an replace it. Also like I mentioned they have a filter in the bottom of them, so it's good to replace them anyways. The line to the cooler can be replaced by a hydraulic shop if you don't want to shell out the buck for a entire new one. You will have to pull out the cooler which isn't that big a deal, but it only cost me $25 for a shop to braise on a new host and fitting. Or I think some have just ground off the old fitting and replaced it with hose and a hose clamp. Just make sure you use some hose that is rated for fluids like power steering fluid.

They put a complete pump unit on mine and it was $375. Did I get screwed or could it have needed the complete unit?

He's referring to just the reservoir itself. It doesn't sound like he needs a pump at this point.

Found main leak to be at PS resevoir seam (e.g., where clear and black are "fused"). Hoses were also slightly leaking at the clamps. As such, installed new Porsche Recommended "updated" PS resevior (all black); and special full circle "ear" hose clamps (which remedied the seaping at the hose ends). Also re-crimped the high pressure hose end at the steering rack.

Afterward, removed the engine under tray; and thoroughly cleaned the tray and engine. Re-installed the tray and all is well (and dry!!!).

Hope this helps.

I had bought the reservoir on E-bay, Im going to start there and see what needs to be replpaced after that.Hopefully my problem will be solved. I will update my progress.

I would assume reuseing the old Power steering fluid would be OK however i think for a few dollars you may want to use new oil.

Thanks for the help
