gearing up for speed and mileage
#21

arrrrgh. it looks like audi doesn't sell gears like everybody else does. i thought the 5th and 6th swap would be roughly a grand in gears. that is because i assumed that they sold the gears as sets for each gear (floating and fixed gear as a set). unfortunately they don't do that, so my cost just doubled.

i sure hope i like this. really wrestling with the decision now.

at 80 mph, the 3rd to 4th drop is 1400 rpm and would stay the same. the 4th to 5th drop is 850 rpm stock and would be 1100 with the new gear. 5th to 6th is 600 stock and would be 1000 with the new gear. nice spacing, would lower the revs at road speed quite a bit, and would improve mileage and reduce noise.

but $2k in parts???

probably still going forward, but choking on it at the moment.

i have changed my mind on the gears and am only going to stretch out 6th gear, and not as far as i was before. this should do nicely

very bummed!!!

i trusted some info on that "other" site, and found it to be VERY wrong (yeah - that's never happened over there before).

with very few exceptions, and none of them useable, the audi gears do not interchange with the porsche gears. the shaft diameter is different.

so, for the time being, i am going to have to button this back up as is. i will have to have gears made to do what i want, and then get back in there later.

oh well.

small glimmer of hope. i may be able to get a gear done in time. we'll see.

the problem is that the only gears that fit our shaft diameter are WAY too tall in ratio. while it would be nice to drop the rpms a bunch, the .600 gear that is out there would drop them so much that i would be right back where i started with the stock layout and power, with not enough torque to pass without downshifting. plus, the spacing of the gears would have sucked, and that would then require changing other gears to try to even out the spacing

in the end, i would have ended up with a gearbox that felt like a pickup truck, with wide gear spacing. there is a reason that performance cars have close ratio boxes and not wide ones. i don't think i need to try to rethink what we already know.

if this turns out to be still too low of a gear, then i will change the ring and pinion. i am just not sure i will have enough torque to push it. i think they did a pretty good job on most of the gearbox, and had they have added a bit more power, just messing with 6th a bit would do it.

so, one way or the other, i am going to get 6th changed. i just don't know yet if it will be a custom gear, or a modified gear, and whether it will happen now, or in a few months.

we'll see today.

i wonder how many more of the supercharger guys would be interested in a taller 6th?

For the costs it would take a lot of miles to break even .

So comfort should be way up before i would consider this operation.

Especially with the fresh gears i have under there now

It would be a "nice to have" but I doubt I would do it given the eventual cost. Your Audi gear prices (1,000.00 a set?) plus the cost of a trans rebuild, no point upping 6th and not refreshing the trans, and adding LSD while I'm in there. I think it would tip over $5K with no problem. So sad.

you wouldn't be rebuilding the trans. the tail section is all that needs to come off, and the job is a bit over 2 hours. the only thing i need to find out is if the trans needs to come out to do it. even so though, the whole job would not be more than about $2k

Several years ago I built a replica of a 1966 GT40. The car used a ford 302 V8 wih an Audi O16 transmission. The gearing on that box was not very suitable for the V8 with first being go to 19 MPH, so the box was dirven as a 4 speed, never using first. To cure this problem I purchased a .322 final drive for the O16 which made the car much more usable.

I mention this because the O16 and the O1E that is used in the 968 are very close relatives. The GT40 community has done a ton of research on what will and what will not work on these boxes, I suggest that you take a look at that site in the transmission section for information on gearsets.

www.gt40s.com The custom ring and pinion i purchase set me back over 2K 8 years ago, so this is not a cheap solution.

lol - yup - hasn't been helpful to me YET, but i'm hopeful

i've also confirmed that the trans has to come out to do the job

R&R of trans - 8 hrs

gear swap - 2.5 hrs

gasket, cap, bolt, etc $20

gear set cost - $900 (assuming i can get gears working and they cost the same as the others)

assuming a $100/hr rate, you are looking at just about $2k for the whole job

we'll see how this works out

One of the things on my list is taller/wider gears for the turbo......... My plan has always been to replicate the TS ratios though.

the TS ratios are only different in 5th and 6th. as far as i have been able to tell so far, the gears are no longer available anywhere.

the TS did have a different ring and pinion ratio too (3.44)

Im trying to remember....its been a couple years since I looked into it. I think the TS has a longer first, fifth, and sixth. I was quoted about 1k/gear from California Motorsports IIRC. I was pleased to see this thread today, I need to start thinking about this again soon. Somehow I missed it a month ago. When you started it.

nope. according to everything i can find, it was the same 1-4, though as i said, the ring and pinion ratio was taller at 3.455 rather than 3.778. that would make 1st "seem" taller

bobby is my next call in the morning. last time i checked, he did not do taller 5 and 6. he only made the others closer, which is not what i want to do.
