Gearbox Shift Problems
#21

Craig,

I agree with your mechanic that it seems unusual that your clutch failed so early. I have read on other forums that some clutch friction disc types are more prone to failure than others, with a common failure being shearing of the studs that hold the material on, resulting in chunks being discarded from the backing plate. Do you know what brand of clutch disc was used for the replacement(s)?

My guess is that the clutch failure may have contributed to the synchro failure through binding with the pressure plate during gear changes. For reference, the clutch in my S2 is a Porsche supplied replacement - no problems after 4 years of mainly track use (and still has around half of the friction material left on it). Perhaps I'm just not as hard on mine with downshifts?

Eric

i fragged a disk at 25k miles - of course i had a 12lb flywheel in it, and wasn't doing a good job of gear matching, and powershifting down into turn 11 and then coming out of turn 12 and banging from 2nd to 3rd at 7500 didn't help - lol

itty bitty pieces it was (in my best "yoda" voice)

I thought I would resurrect this topic. I most likely destroyed the 1st/2nd synchronizing hub when missing a down shift, so finding the synchronizing hub is proving difficult and expensive. The question is, as this is a Audi trans-axle, as anyone tried to source parts through Audi, and if so how was the cross reference accomplished, for part numbers.

do NOT make the mistake of thinking this is an audi box. some of the parts are audi - some are porsche. there is no cross reference sheet that i know of, and i even called sunset and put the head of the porsche parts department in the same room with the head of the audi parts department to try to figure this out.

porsche and audi really messed this up. i have been going through this with my project. the gears and such do not necessarily interchange. it was things like even if the tooth count was right, the shaft diameter was wrong. i have had to figure this out part by part, after first taking things apart, and then comparing to the audi parts. this has been a very expensive process, as i get the pleasure of paying the shipping charges both ways, and a 20% restocking fee on each part i return.

in the end, i found that things did not interchange for my project, and i will have to have new parts made.

for your problem, you will likely have to buy the part, and then take your box apart to see if it is the same.

Well somehow I figured this wasn't going to be easy or cheap, wishful thinking I guess. I'll start building a crate and ship it to someone who knows what they're doing.

Sunset quote $900 and 12 weeks lead time on the part.
