Little zoom/ whine from gearbox
#1

Hi,

This weekend I changed the enigine oil, gearbox oil (75W90) and all the other usual service items. Today I took the car for a drive and I noticed some zoom/ whine coming from the gearbox. I just listened to sound clips posted on the forum, my sound is not that loud as the sound on the sound clips, but it is there.....

I got the oil from my local part shop, I have been a customer for a long time and I never had any problems with them, but now it makes me wonder.....before the oil change no noise, after the change there is a noice.

What is the best thing to do? drain the old oil and get new oil from the Official Dealer/ Porsche Shop? or should I let the old oil in and see if the sound gets any worse?

Thank you in advance,

Regards,

Rutger

There are the same weight gear oils from different manufacturers that do not "sound" the same. Also check to see if the gear oil that was put in is for a LSD or not.

You might try Castrol SAF-XJ, 75w-140 for LSD, or Swepco 201 for non-LSD.

In any case the oil will not hurt your gearbox, but I would ask what brand they used and if it had the correct additives if you have a LSD.

Hi,

So I changed the transmission oil (Swepco, I did not know it was blue BTW...) The little whine is still present. So it must be something mechanical. On closer inspection the sound comes only from the right rear (when sitting in the car). So my question: is it a pinion bearing or could it be something else? (parking brake, CV-joints) I will check these items this weekend.

Furthermore I already checked the prices on a rebuild. Complete rebuild is €1800,- or I could by a used gearbox with 64000 KM`s on its gears.. for €1000,- what do you guys think is the best option? Before I have to pay for the gearbox I can have it test fitted, so that I can check that there is no noice coming from this gearbox.

Thank you in advance,

Cheers,

How many kilometers on the car? When my pinion bearing began to fail, it started out as a barely perceptable whine that was independent of what gear I was in. The pitch changed as the speed of the car increased. My car is left hand drive and the whine sounded as if it was coming more or less from directly behind me when I drove with the windows up and the sunroof closed. With the drivers side window open, the road noise made it sound as if the whine was coming from the right side. When I finally overhauled the transmission the whine from the back of the car sounded like a jet engine. The noise was so "disturbing" I couldn't drive the car for more than an hour at a time.

If it is the pinion bearing or some other mechanical problem, I'd opt for a transmission overhaul rather than replace it with a used transmission. If you have the overhaul down by a reputable shop and there is a problem with it you may have some recourse. If you install a used transmission, I'm not sure that you have much recourse if something isn't right about the replacement. I have 30,000 miles on my overhauled transmission and it is quite and trouble free.

The whine from a bad pinion bearing is most noticable on overrun; from highway speeds, (80-100 kph) lift off the throttle, and it should be VERY

noticable. It will get progressivly louder with time and mileage.

On my car, it sounded as if the sound was from the right rear as well.

I concur with the rebuild idea if it is necessary - a good technician can rebuild your transmission to better than new specifications. With a used gearbox, you have no idea what you are getting.

by the way - I paid around $2800 US (around 2,000 euros at today's rates) for a rebuild last year, but it was done by a surgeon. 1,800 euros seems like a reasonable price.

Hi Rutger,

I had the same after chancing the oil. I'd added the wrong Kroon oil in to it.

The specs were good. But the right one is the sp1011. My wine stopped.

The cost are ± 20 euro for a liter. You can get a bottle at Brezan.

By the way, Where are you located?

HI,

I also used the kroon oil, then I changed to Swepco and the wine is still present. So do you think that the Kroon oil will be better?? I will have to look at what type of kroon oil I used....I already have the new gearbox, but i can return it.

I am located in Eindhoven,

Hi Rutger,

I live near Utrecht. You changed twice so I do not think the wine will stop after all.

But have you metal parts in the oil?? If you have that than I would change the gearbox. Otherwise I would not change to quickly. I would also try to look if the silentblocks etc are in good shape. no metal contact with the body from the gearbox. This will also transfer the winegear direct to the body. and that is frustrating. I bought the car with a rebuilt transmission but also got a wine. I changed the fuild etc and the wine was gone. But I also did something with the silentblocks so I do not now exact anymore what is was.

Ritchie,

When i changed the oil there were no metal parts in the oil....The whine increases also when driving faster, so I do not think it lies within the silent blocks. Next weekend I will swop the gearboxes and see what happens.....i will post my findings.

Anyone else reaching the conclusion that this is definately Pinion Bearing?

without some more specifics, i hesitate to conclude anything, but i would not discount the possibility

the right rear location has me thinking axle bearing, but that is usually a howl, and not a whine, and changes depending on side load

Rutger,

I have a whine that sounds just like yours. I have had the pinion done, so for me, that is not it. Oil had no effect, I use Swepco as well. Mine first appeared after an oil change?? The sound location can be deceptive when you listen from the driver's seat. Sound bounces around back there and I am not sure that locating the component is that reliable.

I had my PM do some listening while it was running on the lift. The opinion was that it was the main shaft bearings, as it tracked in wine pitch with the speed of the car. I'd be interested in what you find on yours. How can one eliminate the CV joints on the axles as the cause without replacing them, as they turn while you are moving? What is more likely to fail first, CV joints or transaxle bearings?

I am also interested in this topic, because my car has a major whine when I get back from a DE session. It never happens on the street, and it was quite faint during my first DE three months ago, last weekend it sounded like a supercharger! It only happens in gear while driving, so this leads me to believe that it is the gearbox. After everything cools off if stops....I am really nervous to keep tracking the car knowing its going to be a long tow-truck ride home!

Hi,

So I did the gearbox swap last weekend and I am pleased to tell that the whine is gone (pfeeww). So this rules out the CV-joints, i only applied some new grease to them, and the wheel bearings. I also fitted the upper strut brace, new castor blocks and changed both swaybars: the are now both M030 style. After this work I had the car`s allignment checked and corrected....the only thing left is the lower strut brace, I will post my findings on fitting the lower brace once I am done.

Regards,

Rutger

p.s. if somebody is looking for a second gearbox with al little whine.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

remember to release the preload on the upper brace before installing the lower brace
