Gas prices
#81

Same. Except now for the newest member of my family. I will pick it up tomorrow. It will go into the house garage along with 8 tires. Things are getting a little tight as I try to replace my losses from the garage. Looks like a perpetual party at my house with all the vehicles in the driveway. Party on Garth!

found a relevant Jeff Foxworthy joke

"If the blue book value of your truck is based on how much gas is in your tank, then you MIGHT be a redneck"

It actually started in April 2020...and before that it was November 2018.

https://www.gasbuddy.com/charts

Not sure if the rest have noticed a similar pattern but when Covid was in full effect the amount of cars on the road was far far less.. and gas prices went downward. Driving around lately its almost back to where it was before the pandemic...prices have rebounded to prior levels.  Roughly where we were in April 2019.   Prices of everything as gone up as demand exceeds supply.    Shockwave will no doubt follow when we have a correction and supply catches up and exceeds demand.

Lets see where we are at...  hmm...economy is doing very well, home prices are going crazy, interests are low, people are mostly buying SUV and Trucks, many of the US auto makers have stopped making cars...     what could possibility go wrong?  anyone else getting a little Deja Vu moment here?!?!?

btw, Warren Buffet has been hoarding cash for a while now.  He seems to have a good idea what's coming.  $139 Billion in CASH,sitting and waiting.

When I compare prices in the US vs the rest of the world I feel like we are getting off easy.

I was in SoCal this past weekend, I noticed one station at over $ 6/gal price for 91 octane...in Newport Beach .

( $ 6.09 )

on a separate but related note,  this gas tank door sticker is too funny ..

I think it’s outrageous what they charge for 100% octane gas. Like Totally.

Prices are climbing here like mad, but if anyone is under the illusion EV cars will be cheaper, think again the governments will need to replace all that lost duty from somewhere

E10 £1.33 / litre = $1.84

V-Power £1.52 /litre = $2.10

Yikes !   But, if reported statistics are accurate , UK and Europeans on the main continent drive approx. half on a per capita basis vs. US, so that’s materially less spending.

And, at the risk of being smug ( since I’m an ardent anti-EV guy ) I take satisfaction in learning that California will terminate EV access to commuter lanes by 2025 .    They already terminated hybrids, and soon it’ll be fully electric cars turn .   A lot of people who bought these cars ( in this state anyway ) did it in large part because they wanted to zoom by in the commute lane, not just their decisional “ I’m saving the earth “ attitude.   Ha, I wonder if in a short 4 years they’ll trade in their EVs for real cars !

Why did they terminate this lane access?

Quote:Why did they terminate this lane access?

As I understood it ( from what I read on the topic )  it’s because the popularity of Hybrids and now full EVs , which are about as numerous here as it gets with single drivers congesting the HOV lane and defeating the original purpose of the lane : high occupancy vehicles .   The HOV was created to promote ride sharing so as to have less cars on the road and now that incentive is eroding because the HOV lane is as congested as the rest, and despite the savings on gas if it takes the same amount of time to get to your destination people prefer the independence of driving their own cars to the carpool scenarios hassles.  Although with the gas prices nowadays I’d think sharing the cost of fuel would still be an incentive to carpool.  Nonetheless, there’s been enough lobbying by gas car owners complaining of “ entitled “  EV drivers ( who do tend to be better off financially than the average person ) congesting the HOV lanes that the legislature finally gave in and the measure not to renew the EV stickers past 2025 passed, just as the hybrid ones were not renewed a few years ago.    The other more politically-motivated reason was the argument that in areas with large “disadvantaged” communities the congestion of the HoV lanes would cause even more  disadvantages for those folks who own regular cars and want to carpool.

Catching up with Europe ?!

“ Gas prices in a small California town hit $7.59 per gallon of regular unleaded this week.  In rural California along the Big Sur coastline, the township of Gorda for instance, one gas station is charging a whopping $7.59 per gallon of regular unleaded, and premium is just shy of $8.50 per gallon, local ABC affiliate KFSN reported on Thursday “

What percentage of that price is a tax that goes to the state?

Coming close, still about U$ 1,50/gallon short to Dutch prices at the moment.

Here’s a chart from earlier this year , I imagine the taxes are proportionately higher as aligned with the current higher cost per gallon.

Don’t know what the impact ( if any..) is, but I am a huge supporter of the proposed measure to tax EVs for road use, so they pay their fare share .
