Gas prices
#41

CNN , while reporting today on falling gas prices , said that for every single penny drop in a gallon of gas , one million dollars in windfall discretionary spending income is pumped back into the economy. The math would seem to make sense, but how realistic is that given human behavior ?

Perhaps that penny is spent elsewhere. Penny saved is a penny earned. Don't you save your pennies.

I was in Los Angeles for the past four days ...check out the price of gas !! Had to take a photo since this is the highest cost Ive seen yet this summer . But there were also a lot of gas stations with less than $ 4.50 for 91 octane so Im sure its a location thing, just like real estate ( that station was fairly close to Beverly Hills ) . Still, pretty ridiculous since almost $ 1.50 per gallon of that is mostly tax to fix the infrastructure and its been in place for a while , yet the roads are among the worst in the nation and I have not seen a single venue with any noticeable improvement .

Are you suggesting that Ca doesn’t allocate its tax revenues efficiently? How much does a unionized feces scooper earn in LA or San Fran?

.

Are you suggesting they make any more money than unionized feces scoopers in any other state ? I would doubt that’s the case.

But yes the exorbitant taxes on gas in this state and the inefficiency of how that money is being spent is mind-boggling !

Sanctuary cities are expensive to maintain. I read about it frequently but how many people a year move out of Ca? Is it more than NY, Conn, or iL?

Sanctuary cities have nothing to do with this , in fact if it wasnt for the undocumented migrants those cities protect, all the prices of goods and services in this state would be double or triple what they are now. Think of what those unionized Americans would get paid for picking fruits and veggies 12 hours a day , or working as busboys , or hotel maids , or servers at fast food restaurants or landscape workers, or any manual labor you could possibly list , etc., costs which would all be passed on to us .. the cost of all the benefits provided to those folks is not even 5% of their contribution to Californias economy . You guys need to stop listening to FFNS ( fake Fox News spin ) .

People are leaving California in record numbers because of the super-wealthy who are minted daily here by the tech industry ( and those who come here from China and Russia with bags of money ) and who buy 2 br. 1,200 sq ft. houses for $ 2 Mil , or 600 sq.ft. studio apartments for $ 1 mil. If youre a retiree and your house for which you paid $ 50 K is now worth $ 3 mil , wouldnt you sell it and also move out of state to live the rest of your sunset years in the lap of luxury, instead of being taxed to death on top of spending stupid money just for the basics ? Conversely, the youth who are not employed in the tech world cant possibly settle down here either , so there are plenty of those leaving the state for greener pastures ( at least if not greener , definitely more affordable ones ) . No easy answer .

Rap,

The myth that sanctuary cities are more expensive to maintain is GOP claptrap, mouthed by people who are anti-immigrant and it  s patently untrue. Undocumented residents of California do not suck up public services, they are not entitled to public assistance of any kind, they can't register vote. Their wages are taxed, they pay sales tax, and they pay into social security from which, they will never be able to collect. I have worked along side these folks in California vineyards for the past 10 years and they are among the hardest working, friendly, honest, people I have ever encountered. I would much prefer to have them as my neighbors than a bunch of tRumpistas.

SF, as are many other California Cities, is expensive because California's economy is booming. Fifth largest economy in the world and CA has become overcrowded as a result. California fuel taxes are high, because there is a vast amount of infrastructure that is currently undergoing seismic retrofit. It costs money. The basic cost of fuel, unburdened by taxes is higher on the West Coast than anywhere else. The primary reason for this is that there are no gasoline pipelines that run into California from Texas or other energy producing areas. All of the fuel that is consumed on the West Coast is produced and refined here, so the oil companies have a captive market that they can and do exploit.

We recently relocated to the Portland area and fuel costs here are less than in the Bay Area by about $1.00 to $1.50 a gallon. The difference is primarily taxes. Oregon doesn't have the seismic retrofit issues that California has. The population of California is 10 times that of Oregon, so you would expect the cost of building and maintaining automotive infrastructure in Oregon to be less as well as the taxes that pay for it.

I  read a recent report that California looses about 1.2% of its population, mostly to Nevada, Washington, Arizona and Texas. Oregon is not even in the top 5 places that Californians relocate to.

Here's some interesting info ( map ) on the gasoline tax per gallon in each of the states..  of course the base price per gallon varies significantly from state to state  for multiple reasons, but at least one can see the tax segment differences ..

and some additional data  :      According to eia.gov: "<i>In 2018, about 142.86 billion gallons (or about 3.40 billion barrels1) of finished motor gasoline were consumed in the United States, an average of about 391.40 million gallons (or 9.32 million barrels) per day.</i>" Take those number to the map and do some math. That's $213,586,980 every day or $ 78 billion a year in tax on gasoline alone.

Ouch. Has the Boris Johnson petrol tax already taken effect ? Although Europeans drive quite a bit fewer miles ( generally ) than US folks , so the annual cost should be fairly even...

No extra tax, its cheaper this month than last month,

We have a tax in London now for any petrol car older then 2005, or Diesel Car Older than 2015 to drive in London costs £15 a day, and the congestion charge on top of that at £12 per day.

$32 a day to drive in central london, but in 2021 that expands to the Circular roads around London (not M25) this will then cover 49 Square Miles of London, then in 2026 this expands again to the M25 Orbital London Motorway,

this will mean that 11 million drivers with cars older than 10 years will be taxed every day to drive, and by 2040 We should be all electric HA HA not a chance

I have a good friend who lived in London all his ( 65 year ) life until recently , when he moved to Brighton , for a variety of reasons , but he feels the city driving tax and the not-so-old, 10 year old car penalties are outrageous .. and he has loads of money, but it’s the principle that bothers him to no end .

Same thing that bugs the hell out of me , I can easily afford a 100 % increase in today’s gas prices if it comes to it , but 1) the lack of full accountability and 2) knowing where most of that tax that money really goes , drives me nuts.

Then you REALLY don't want to ask where all the Lotto money for schools has gone. I would be hard pressed to find a more inefficient administration in any still functioning organization.

Two possibilities :

1. a portion of the money from casinos would be diverted to subsidize the property taxes fund and enable lowering the tax rate the county charges the homeowner. ( yeah, right .. )

2. casinos will attract riff raff causing the real estate values in the county to plunge , and thus proportionateky lower the taxes you pay ..

( most likely scenario ).

Just about three weeks later and in the all expensive Bay Area, the gas is about $ 3.49 at most stations More than $ 2.00 cheaper per gallon than it was in Los Angeles. As far as I know the summer grade gas has not yet been replaced, so what can possibly explain a $ 2.00 difference ?! Not that I’m complaining , but it just seems very odd.
