The locking mechanism has three main components. The first is the microswitch that detects if the key's been turned (10 in the subsequent diagram). That sends the signal to the central locking to unlock the other door. The second is the mechanical link between the lock cylinder mechanism and the mechanical lock on the door. The third is the actuator (1 in the subsequent diagram) that locks/unlocks the doors via a command from the central locking mechanism.
Edit:
Problem 2 & 3 are most certainly that the link (the part labeled 2) has worked come loose on the driver's side door. It's an easy fix, popping the link back on to the appropriate ball, but requires taking off the inner door bits.
Problem 1, if I had to guess, would be the driver's side microswitch. The mechanical link is obviously working, since you can unlock the door. The actuator isn't working, based on problems 2 & 3.
In what state are the rubber gaskets around the door handle? And the seal at the bottom of the window? Water could be causing a short in the microswitch on the door handle, or it could be accumulating in the bottom of the door and causing a short in the connector.
Good luck and let us know what you find!

My "new" car has a strange but consistent issue with the central locking.
1. Hitting the central locking switch locks and unlocks the passenger door only.
2. I lock the driver door and passenger door separately, and they do not react to each other but when I unlock the driver door, it also unlocks the passenger door. Unlocking the passenger door does not unlock the driver door.
At first I thought maybe it was the microswitch in driver door but if it opens the passenger door, then it must be ok? Perhaps driver door actuator? I took the driver door apart, and everything is at least connected. The door seals are shot, so I'm sure water has soaked everything in the door. I didn't feel like taking apart the door handle to check and clean the microswitch but maybe that will be my next task.
