I'm a newbie to this forum, and wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the great info. Many of my questions have been answered, but I have two questions that I can't seem to find the answers to.
I want to change my fuel filter (Mahle KL 40), but I can't find where it is on my 968. Is it hidden behind a panel somewhere?
Also, I want to change the transmission oil in my Tiptronic transaxle. The specs say to use "Hypoid transmission oil SAE 75W90". Is Hypoid transmission oil a fancy name for "gear lubricant", and can I just use a good synthetic "gear lubricant"?
Are you talking about changing the Tiptronic fluid? The Tiptronic is mounted on the rear axle. I got a lot of differing opinions about changing the fluid. One Porsche/BMWshop doesn't believe in changing the fluid if it has been more than 30,000 miles since the previous change, stirs up the gunk was their logic, leading to failure. Another said look at the color, change it if it is brownish, better to have fresh fluid, even if the change is overdue. I opted for two drain and partial refill cycles and then pulling the filter and draining a little more. I'm probably at about 80% fresh fluid, dropping the filter removed more fluid than just draining the transmission. I found one of those cheap fluid pumps made for the quart oil/AF bottles worked the best.
Haven't changed the fuel filter yet. On the 944 it is mounted above the rear axle, I suspect on the 968 it is close to that location although there are small panels covering openings that were left uncovered on the 944.
