Front Grill Mesh
#1

Are these still available? I remember it was someone on this board that used to fabricate them. It was an inexpensive piece that updated the look of the 968 front end.

If anyone remembers who made them, or if they have an extra that they'd like to part with....let me know.

Thanks

Chris

it was dave greimann who used to make them. the last time i heard, they were no longer available.

i will be probably be producing the lower grilles soon. not sure about the upper one. the material is very fragile, and it is easily damaged. i'd like to have a better way of installing it that didn't end up breaking it. my front bumper cover will be coming off soon for another project, and i'll see what i can come up with.

Thanks for the very quick, reply. Let me know what you come up with.

I'm in the mood for lots of little pieces that I feel lacking without:

- grill mesh

- custom door sills

- 9xauto cup holder that requires no screw holes

- stainless 6-speed gear shift pattern insert

- replacement temperature readout guage

As you can tell, all little stuff, but I'm easy to please. Just don't ask the wife. Last time I went out for an afternoon drive, I came home with a set of 17" turbo twists, and a new leather shifter boot.....just couldn't pass up a great deal.

Porsche still stocked the lower grill about 5 years ago, as I ordered one for my 1992 coupe...

I would try Sunset Imports in Oregon... they always seem to have "connections" in finding the rare stuff, and didn't seem to mind hunting for me!

Don't recall that it was very expensive... Maybe $50.00??? The problem is that the plastic factory parts get brittle over time...

sorry, OT, but speaking of Dave G .. seems as if he suddenly just dropped off the edge of the earth... Do any of you SoCal guys know if he still has the 968 ? And along the same lines how about Eric R ?! Last I heard his goal was to get at least 500 hp under his foot, and seriously doubt the 968 was the platform for that project.. Both of them great guys all around, and also with lots of knowledge which could have continued to add value to this forum and the 968 community. Sigh..

Yes, we should start a new thread about this; another "missing" formerly very active participant is Anchorman - anybody have any idea what became of him? He stopped posting very suddenly. Seemed like a great guy.

But back to the topic, hopefully DaveN will chime in, because he did a great job fabricating a lower grill out of some sort of steel mesh, so he definitely has the skills to make this stuff. Now, the desire may be different matter altogether...

I just ordered the factory replacement grill for my red car - now 80 from Sunset but still available at this time.

A friend of mine had some 20 gauge mesh left over from his Corvette project. He custom made me an upper grill. See picture. Pete couldn't stand loking at my broken lower grill any more so he replaced mine with OEM.

Yes, I fabricated my upper and lower grilles out of SS expanded mesh last year. There is a thread here about it, just search for "Cuts" and "Blood loss"

I just left a note on Jim "Anchorman" cellphone so perhaps he will post. Last time I saw him was at the Hershey Swap Meet - hope he is ok.

Hey, good to know that Porsche still has the lower grills available! I bet that when they are all gone that will be it! $80.00 is not bad; think I will order one just to have on hand, and if someone needs it, wee will have at least one in our group! Great info, and yes it would be great tto track down some of our "missing" members!

I agree. But being so isolated here in the middle of nowhere (aka the state of Texas), I've never had any direct contact with any forum members. Maybe if some of you want to come out for the F1 race next November... Someone who is more active in the forum on a personal basis, please start a "missing persons" thread. Anchorman and I exchanged a few PMs - he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I too hope he's OK. The abruptness with which he stopped posting is concerning. I looked for him on the other 968-related forums, and couldn't find any sign of him.

I spoke to Anchorman and he is ok. He did have a business setback but has recovered. He was somewhat surprised that anyone posted about his absence since I was the first person from the 968 community that has contacted him. I have his cellphone number if anyone would like to chat with him but prefer not to post it here.

There have been forums I once frequented on a daily basis for multiple years, but then I haven't been back in several years. The two most recent, www.farmallcub.com and www.joescnc.com are probably lamenting my absence even as we speak!

Do I see a "BN" lover here??? My Stepdad in Upstate NY has two Farmall BN's in very nice original condition and still mowing the lawn with them weekly!!!

I helped him rebuild the carb on one just this past June... fantastic simple but nice tractors!!!

Cubs, A's, C's, M's, yup. They're so ultimately simple, and my P-car hobby satisfies the complete *other* end of the spectrum!

back on topic

i'll be yanking off the bumper cover in a couple of weeks, and then getting the lower grills done.

i'll also put in a call to dave and see if he wants to either make the uppers again, and hopefully with a different mounting mechanism, or if he'll save me the time of making the buck and sell it to me, and then i'll work out the mechanism

made and installed a new upper grill sunday. doesn't use bent 'tabs' to hold it in, so it can be removed more than once if necessary. i have enough mesh to make 2 more....
