Fixed my Temp display unit...
#1

I had my shop order the exact part number for the bulb first. What came in wasn't the right part. So I soldered a dash bulb in.

Just thought I'd warn ya'all!

By your temp display unit, do you mean the digital one that displays the outside air temp in degrees F or C, or the engine coolant temp? It sounds like the former. Anyway, my outside temp unit is stuck on degrees C. I pressed the button to show my 10-year-old daughter how it switches between units, and now it won't go back to deg F. Anybody else ever had this problem? Obviously far from a major issue, but I was wondering if there is an easy fix. Thanks.

Cloud, your culprit is a bad Fuse #11 in your engine bay fuse box. It's a 15 amp fuse.

I have the same problem. I posted on 968.net and did not get anyone with the same problem to join me. You will find that your fuse #11 is just fine unfortunately.

Glad to see I'm not the only one, so thanks for the therapy.

I wish it was that easy. I tried all possible permutations with various length pauses while hopping on one foot and tapping myself on the head with the other hand, to no avail.

Back to the original thread here and question for sasilverbullet.

My other problem with the outside temp gauge, since we are on the topic, is the fact that the display does not illuminate when the headlights are turned on. Was this your original issue that caused you to replace the bulb?

The bulb on the temp gauge gets it's power off the units circuit board. If the temp unit powers up, suspect the bulb, or the connection to the board; otherwise I'm afraid you have a faulty unit.

Pretty bold for not being aware of the two fuses responsible for the temp gauge's operation. A bad fuse 11 (which is easily shorted out do to the sheet metal that interferes with the cigarette plug when you remove that trim). For anyone that wants to play, pull fuse 11 and see if you don't have the exact symptoms Cloud described. There are always other possibilities, but it's always best to start with the obvious.

the temp gauge light comes on with ignition on my car - no need to turn the HL on.

as for "C" display only.. any chance the little press switch is stuck? Never had this happen, but it sounds like it is not logic or fuses - just the mechanical switch.

I've taken apart the digital clock in the 944/951's and IIRC, there is a rubber pad and bubble contacts on the PC board. Maybe something gave out and the "C" switch is now permanently "on"

...and dims when the HLs are turned on.

Go pull fuse 11 then tell me that.

morton - all your questions were already answered! I've been soooo busy, hardly any time to check the board!

Thanks Michael. After exploring all my options, stopping short of dissecting the unit, I conclude that mine is faulty. All my fuses are fine.

RusTech...you must be in a bad mood. What's up?

Well Morton, your comment "You will find that your fuse #11 is just fine unfortunately," got me a bit annoyed. None of us are psychic, so I felt you discredited my response, without being fully aware of it being a possibility. It is extremely weird Porsche engineering at its best to have 2 fuses responsible for operation of the unit, and so most don't realize it's the case. There are plenty of us that have run into the temp display issue where part of the fuction was lost (no degF) do to shorting out the cigarette lighter plug on the glove box sheet metal that petrudes.

Talking to Cloud in a PM, he mentioned that his degC button was not returning to the normal position (yeah I know ) and so his fuse 11 was not the culprit. His unit is obviously faulty.

No problem.
