fan wont quit
#1

Hello,

Had a great experience today. Car would not start. Was initally diagnosed as a dead battery turned out to be combination of a faulty serpentine belt and continued activation of the radiator fan. Belt has been fixed however the fan still continues to run after turning off ignition. They said the relay seems to be working ok(they can hear a click when plugging it back in). I have to unplug the relay to turn off the fan. Any suggestions? I hope so.

The fan is supposed to run for a few minutes after the ignition has been turned off. It helps the car to cool better if it brings the temp. down, so the motor doesn't heat soak. If the fan runs for a long time, 10 min, there could be a fault with your fan switch.

Is there a site similar to clarks garage for 968s. Or is there a repair manual available on this site or any other. Its tough not having some guides to help wiht repairs. My 944 was easy.

Thermo sensor on the radiator is at fault. It is a $12 vw part that is below the top rad hose. You can get them in different temperature ranges.

Before you remove the sensor, you can verify if it is at fault by disconnecting it (plug at the sensor). If the fans keeps on running it can still be the relay (like it was on my car).

The exact same thing happened to me. The fan would not shut off. I had to pull the relay to keep the fans from draining the battery overnight.

The thermo sensor was the problem. Not expensive, but takes a big socket or box wrench to remove and replace. 29mm. Seal it with Teflon paste to keep it from leaking.

Be extra careful when threading in the new fan switch. If you cross thread it, you'll end up needing a new radiator.
